4. Canadian Paralympic Committee
CPC Launches Fundraising Campaign "Heroes to Athens"
Organization looking to raise $6 million leading up to the 2004 Paralympic
Games in Athens
The Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) is launching its fundraising campaign towards the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens. Entitled "Heroes to Athens", the campaign aims to raise $6 million over the next 16 months. The Committee has already raised $1.3 million, and has a commitment for $2.7 million from its three key partners, Petro-Canada ($200,000), Pfizer ($800,000) and the Government of Canada ($1.75M). Individual Canadians and corporate Canada are being asked to contribute financially to this fundraising campaign either by making a donation, by joining the Paralympic Booster Club or by becoming a sponsor.
"The objective of this campaign is not only to send a team to the Paralympic Games, but also to develop and promote the Paralympic Movement in Canada, from playground to podium" said CPC Director General Brian MacPherson. "Of the $6M, 40% will be used to send a team of athletes to Athens, and 15% will be set aside for the Paralympic Excellence Fund", he added.
According to Chef de Mission Louis Barbeau, "The funds donated by government and sponsors are truly an investment, not only where the 2004 athletes are concerned, but in terms of developing and maintaining a permanent pool of athletes with physical disabilities. These are exceptional athletes, and are sports heroes even before they go to the Games".
In the Sydney Games in 2000, Canada finished third overall and took home 96 medals, including 38 gold. There were some 4,000 athletes from 123 nations taking part in the Games. In Athens, the Canadian delegation will comprise approximately 160 athletes competing in 16 of the 18 sports on the program.
