News from BCAA (disponible en français la semaine prochaine)
In the last few months the BC Archery Association, encouraged and supported by the FCA has taken a new look at the way we run our FITA events. In the not so distant past it was sad to go out to watch or even attend a FITA Star. It would not be unusual to see as few as three people shooting at STAR. With the
FITA Star taking up the field no other shooters could use the field. At the start of the outdoors season this year we decided to try what other provinces have also started to try. The thought was to run the FITA Star with the timing and whistles for that event, and allow a 900 round to run along side. There were lots of questions when the Burnaby club stepped up to try this, but when everything was in order they took the chance.
At the 1st attempt they had 23 - FITA shooters and 25 - 900 round shooters. The club realized a good outcome, but the best part of the day event was that our very youngest outdoor shooters were able to see and be around some of Canada's best Archers. The event was large enough to draw spectators through out the day and add to the potential benefits.
There was however an incident that marred the day. This came from a level 5 US coach who brought his team up to our registered event. As he armchair coached, by loudly directing his shooters from his chair behind the 5-meter line, he drew a good deal of attention to himself. At some point during this day he informed the TC committee that he was going to formally protest the FITA STAR as the field for a FITA Star is to be dedicated to nothing else but the STAR and the coincidence of the 900 made the STAR invalid.
Although I was not at this event I have it from more than several sources that his behaviour was not pleasant and he left the field with the TC's feeling thrashed.
After having such a good event for us numbers and age spread wise I was concerned that we may have lost it all to a technically.
I approached the FCA and through their information. I found that there is not FITA rule stating that the field can not have another event on it at the same time, and as long as the timing and the shooting whistles control the activity of the FITA STAR there is no problem. I was glad to hear this because target archery in BC has been taking some serious hits the past years and the potential for revival is there, as seen in the first event. It would have been a shame, but like I said the Burnaby club did their homework and we will continue to run the 900 round on the Sundays of a FITA STAR. Good on ya!

VP Athlete Development
BC Archery Association.

The FCA is seeking input from all FCA members on the question of Inner Ten versus Outer Ten scoring for the Indoor 18m Target Round. There is considerable discontent with using the Inner Ten in Canada and in other FITA member countries. An FCA survey has been posted on the internet to find out what FCA members think about this issue. The subject will be discussed at the August FCA Board meeting and it is important that the Board learn as much as possible about members' views. The survey also deals with target sizes for various age classes and this matter will also be a topic of discussion at that Board meeting. The survey is at:
There is some background information setting out some of the advantages and disadvanatages of the various options so please read the material and answer the survey thoughtfully. The FCA needs your input.
The survey will be available in a French version for next week.
There is also a discussion forum thread on this topic on the FCA discussion board for anyone with follow-up
