Ray Crawford Remembered (uniquement an anglais)
From
the post-war years well into the sixties, Terry Dickson, wearing many hats, was
the mainstay of the then Canadian Archery Association, now Federation of
Canadian Archers. Terry's departure
left some big shoes to fill.
When
Ray Crawford of Winnipeg took the helm in 1968, the organization was
floundering a bit for want of organization and leadership. Ray was just the organizational man
needed. He was diligent and
conscientious, efficient and cool headed.
I became secretary/editor at the same time and because we lived in the
same city, we could work together closely at putting things in order. In fact, this often amounted to daily
telephone contact.
Owing
to a lack of financial resources, and Winnipeg being centrally located,
executive meetings were held in that city, with the Crawfords and Rohringers
providing accommodation to the out-of-towners.
The formula was a successful one and worked well for many years. Ray's wife, Wonetta, provided especially
good egg salad sandwiches. Under Ray's
leadership the organization ran smoothly and prospered both nationally and
internationally.
It
was my privilege to work with a remarkably capable and amiable leader. Ray had a favorite, oft used, quote, with
which I wish to conclude this brief account of long service.
"So
long as the new moon returns in the heaven a bent, beautiful bow,
So
long will the fascination of archery keep hold of the hearts of men.
Maurice
Thompson, The Witchery of Archery, 1878.
*****************************************************************************************
His
boyhood years in Indian Head, Saskatchewan were shaped by the "Dirty
Thirties" and ended at the age of 17 when he enlisted. After proudly serving his country overseas
with the Royal Canadian Armed Forces, he obtained his Engineering degree at the
University of Saskatchewan. In 1950, he
moved to Winnipeg, accompanied by his new bride Wonetta, where he commenced a
32 year career with the Manitoba Telephone System, including a 3-year stint in
Saudi Arabia. Ray and Wonetta resided
in Winnipeg for 36 healthy and happy years, raising their family of 5 and
forming lifelong friendships.
Those
close to Ray were inspired by his youthful outlook and his never-ending pursuit
of knowledge and life experiences.
Besides having a passion for hunting, fishing, duplicate bridge and
history, over the years he also enjoyed archery, bowling, curling, scuba
diving, travelling, camping and skiing.
He was a lifelong member of the Manitoba Historical Society and
collected a vast library of historical data.
Because of his love of history, he was inspired to write his
autobiography and a memoir of his boyhood days in Saskatchewan. He served the Federation of Canadian Archers
as president from 1968 to 1976 and was a driving force in having Archery
recognized as an Olympic sport. It was
his honour to serve as a representative for the FCA during the 1976 Olympics in
Montreal.
After
his retirement from MTS, he had a brief real-estate career until 1986 when the
call of the ocean prompted a relocation to Parksville, BC on Vancouver
Island. Countless fishing trips
stimulated an interest in the study of navigation, which culminated in his
appointment as Commander of the Ballenas Power and Sail Squadron. In Parksville, Ray remained active in the
Royal Canadian Legion, swapping war stories and enjoying many a game of
darts. Despite his waning energy in his
last months, he still pursued his favorite activities as much as possible.
A
memorial service celebrating Ray's life was held on April 7th, 2001 at Knox
United Church in Parksville and was officiated by Reverend Foster Freed. Those who wish to remember Ray in a tangible
way are encouraged to consider a memorial gift in his honour to The Canadian
Cancer Society, BC & Yukon Division, 565 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver, BC
V5Z 4J4.

Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport
Canada
has a new program for out of court settlement of disputes for amateur sports.
The national ADR-SPORT-RED program is an out of court settlement system for
disputes that offers mediation and arbitration services to the national sports
community.
In
May 2000 the Secretary of State for Amateur Sport, the Honourable Denis Coderre
formed a work group composed of members of the Canadian sport community in
order to come up with recommendations for solutions aimed at out of court
settlement of disputes related to sports across Canada. The sport community
recommended the implementation of a settlement system based upon mediation and
arbitration. In October 2001, the Secretary of State for Amateur Sport approved
this proposal and requested assistance from the Canadian Centre for Ethics in
Sport (CCES) to assist and supervise the implementation of the first phase of
the program. Having accepted the mandate, CCES formed a steering committee
comprised of representatives of the sport community in order to implement the
ADR-SPORT-RED program.
This
first interim phase will last as long as it takes to create a permanent ADR-SPORT-RED
organisation. Under this interim phase the program only has jurisdiction
over cases where internal regulations or an agreement with the national
organisation allow for independent dispute resolution.
