2. Korean Archery Today by Chris Shull, US Archery Team (uniquement en anglais)

If you have not heard about it already, Guy Krueger and myself have taken a trip to South Korea for some training over our spring break (2002) from Texas A&M University.

uy and I are wrapping up day five in Korea, and I'm not sure how to describe how much we have learned. Mr. Park, Kyung Rae of Win and Win, and everyone else, have bent over backwards to make us welcome.

There are many rumors flying about there being 100 men shooting 1300 or better, how everyone shoots four or five hundred arrows a day etc. etc., In Korea. But I have learned that these rumors are TRUE.

To start, the high school team we have been training with has been shooting 500 arrows a day, and my fingers are quite sore. We shoot blank bale and a FITA in the morning, another FITA and blank bale after lunch, and two more hours after dinner, under lights. When it gets cold we go inside a small building with a heater and shoot out the windows. These kids shoot ALL day. They have been selected to train at the National Phys Ed High school, and archery is their "major". It is hard to imagine the US Juniors being able to keep up with a program like this, as we would wind up in jail if we skipped math class to practice.

Mr. Yim, the coach at the high school, asked us what the average salary of coaches in the USA is. We replied that most coaches are volunteers with other jobs, and even those that are fortunate enough to earn a salary are not making the big bucks. That was a foreign idea to Mr. Yim, as archery coaching in Korea is a true profession. There are 40 or 50 high school teams, another 30 or 40 corporate teams, and a handful of university teams, all with full time coaches.

Today we watched the Seoul elementary school archery championships, where they shoot 30 and 20 meters. The winners shot in the 340's at 30 meters, and they are only 10 or 12 years old!!!!!!!!!!! They all have better form than ME... I'm telling you, these people know how train their shooters, these kids were text book in technique.

The food has been extremely spicy, and we always eat while sitting on the floor. I should have done more stretching before I left, as my legs don't like to cross.

Today we shot with the National Sports University archery team, after a stop at the Win and Win factory with Mr. Park. The university range is built 50 feet up in the air, on the roof of an ice skating rink. I have pictures that you won't believe.

I have not met one shooter yet, over the age of 17, who was not shooting at least at the low 1300 level. When we arrived at the high school their coach asked us what our best scores were. Guy and I replied "1310-1315" He gave us a blank stare and said "That's all?" His best guys shoot in the 1330's, and his best girl shot a 1365 a few days ago. (She tried a different bow and only shot a 1320, so she went back to her old setup and shot a 1340 again.) We have three more days of shooting adventures to come, and I'm sure we will continue to be amazed.

Till later, Anyo (goodbye in Korea)

Christopher Shull

3. National Coach From BC Gets Shafted (uniquement en anglais)

An account of one boring event on 3rd February, at a 3D shoot, in Penticton.

This is not a political statement as some people might suspect. It's more interesting than that.

Here you will find a sketch, explaining a brief moment in my life. This brief moment, together with the events that followed, explain one of the more interesting moments in my archery life.

In that instant of time after the incident, there was this never-to-be-forgotten moment of excruciating pain. I looked at the situation and thought to myself quite calmly and philosophically, "This is not me!" I then had a nanosecond of thought and said to myself, "Why has Ron Boorman done this to himself?"

Then the blood started to flow freely and I was brought sharply back to reality as I realized that I could not scratch my nose! Once this, and several other thoughts, had percolated through to the sublime levels of relaxation I was automatically focussing on (due to my retired state!), I had another instantaneous thought flashing through my mind. This is where the priorities of life stood out. I did not think about archery at all.

My only concerns were:

i) "Jeez! Jeez! Jeez!", followed by "Damp and plaster a mucky bucket of pitch", together with, "Crickeymoly. My piano playing!!!!!!!!!"

ii) A second rush of thought reminded myself to keep my blood off my clothes. (The natural thought of a well- trained husband). "Wow! Good job I put on my old jeans with the backside nearly worn through!"

Common sense prevailed and I walked to the clubhouse, by this time grunting and muttering under my breath. All I could do was to prop my bow against the Mazda (It is very awkward trying to put one's tackle away with over 22" of arrow protruding from the index finger of the bow-hand.....and I didn't want to scratch the car.)

Heading to the clubhouse I arrived at the bottom of the clubhouse stairs yelling up to my long time friend, Mits Hikichi, (actually I did this quite forcibly, momentarily forgetting my up bringing), saying something like, "Mits.....I need someone to take me to Emergency." Mits appeared and said something I cannot quite remember. Anyway, it was interesting going to the hospital. Mits' car was blocked in.

We had to use the Mazda. I felt rather embarrassed as we tried to get my car keys out of my jeans' pocket. You know how jeans tend to be tight. Well there we were in the middle of the parking lot being watched by archers and shot gun enthusiasts. What a questionable sight we must have presented. Two retired men skirmishing around trying to put their hands into trouser pockets while one of the people in question waved an arm around, out of which, for some peculiarly reason there protruded a black X7 without point. What might people think, especially as they all knew I was one of the outer fringe members of "The Boorman Circus", from Vancouver, which is renowned for its unusual acts? What would Marge Saunders say? Incidentally, how does one get into a car, trying to look quite nonchalant about the situation, when one has a lethal weapon that is trying its utmost to tear open the lining of your car’s roof?

On the way to hospital Mits looked at me anxiously several times. "Are you OK?" Then, "Is your mind still clear?" I responded. Why I said what I said I will never know. It was just my immediate reaction. "Clear? Yes!

There was a young lady of Nod,

Who thought all children came from almighty God.

But it wasn’t the Almighty.

Who lifted her nightie,

‘Twas Roger, the lodger, the sod!"

Needless to say we arrived at emergency and the situation made the surgeon's day. "Wow! Never had one of these before!" "How did it happen? No don't tell me. If I don't know it makes it all the more exciting!" Anyway, an hour latter, after a "Slurp" as the arrow was pushed out, and I realized that I could use the fletch again, and four or five stitches at either end of the three inch tunnel, we were finished. Home for a cup of tea and trying to think up a suitable excuse and explanation for my dear wife.

Such is the day of one archer. As people connected with archery have always said, ''Archery is so boring, it's more exciting to watch paint dry." That's all. Have a nice day.

Doug Soar

P.S. The arrow missed the finger tendons. I played the piano for ten minutes two days later. I played piano for an hour one week later. Shot a 290 and 293 back-to-back three weeks later (big ten scoring! Let's not get too carried away!).

Have designed some armour plating around the bow-grip of my bow so that it looks like I stolen something from an armadillo. Too little, too late, and after approximately 430,000 arrows in 32 years why bother. Still it was an interesting exercise and gave me some finger dexterity manipulative exercise.
