Congratulations to all the volunteers who organized the Ontario
Summer Games, July 18-20, 2002 in Kitchener-Waterloo, and in particular
Bruce Savage and Kathy Shillinglaw. For a change, the weather was
terrific and a lot of good scores were shot. Several Games records were
broken. Congratulations to all of the archers!

1. 3D news
First: the 2002 FCA 3D Archery Committee has eliminated the $10.00 late charge for registrations received after June 30, 2002. All registrations received that include the late payment will be reimbursed the $10.00 at the registration desk.
Second: the 2002 FCA 3D Archery Committee wishes to announce the winner of the "Early Bird Draw" which was drawn during the committee meeting held on July 9, 2002. The winner of a PSE Polaris Express competition bow is Jessie Thompson of Vineland, Ontario and he will be shooting in the CUB class for these Championships. Jessie was contacted the evening of the draw and was pleased that he had registered early. He will be presented with the bow during the 3D Archery Championships. The bow was donated by Don Lohnes, chairman for the event, and FCA's VP - 3D and Bowhunting. Congratulations to Jessie Thompson.
Third: Only Nova Scotia archers need to pay the extra $20 FCA membership fee if they are not FCA members already when they register for the 3D nationals. All other archers must have a current FCA number. Do not include another $20. Archers from outside Nova Scotia who wish to shoot the 3D nationals, but who are not current FCA members, need to contact their recognised provincial archery association.
Fourth: The 2002 FCA 3D Archery Championship committee wishes to
announce that they have been able to collect a fair number of prizes
for the event. All prizes will be drawn for during the banquet being
held on Sunday evening. We hope that all competitors will join in the
good food and Nova Scotia hospitality with the opportunity to win a
nice prize.

Premièrement: Le comité organisateur a annuelé le 10$ de frais supplémentaire pour les inscription reçues après le 30 juin, 2002. Toutes les personnes qui ont envoyé leurs inscriptions avec le supplément recevront un remboursement de 10$ au bureau d'enregistrement.
Deuxièment: Le comité organisateur a

Junior Championship ~~~~
Du 12 au 14 juillet dernier avait lieu à Cincinnati OH, le championnat
junior des USA. Stéphanie Girard (12 ans), Kristel Alain (14 ans),
Marie-Pier Beaudet (15 ans), toutes les trois membres du programme
canadien Excellence 2004, ont participé aux rondes de qualifications
de ce tournoi en tant qu'invité. Stéphanie et Kristel étaient
inscrites dans la catégorie cadette recurve alors que Marie-Pier était
inscrite dans la catégorie junior.
Les trois canadiennes ont étonné plus d'un américains. Dans la
catégorie cadette, où près d'une trentaine d'archers étaient inscrites,
Kristel Alain a terminé 5è au classement général des qualifications
alors que Stéphanie Girard s'est maintenue au milieu du peleton.
Marie-Pier quant à elle, a terminé 2è dans la catégorie junior. Elle
en a profité pour réaliser un nouveau record du monde cadet à 50
mètres qui est maintenant de 320 à deux points seulement du record
canadien senior.
Lors de ce tournoi il y a eu des confrontations en
équipe, homologuées FITA. Les trois filles avaient formé une équipe
«canadienne». Au grand étonnement de quelques centaines d'américains
venus appuyer leur équipe, les trois canadiennes ont gagné
succesivement leurs trois matchs dont le dernier en finale avec un
score de 218 pour remporter la médaille d'or devant l'équipe junior
des USA!
Lors de la remise officielle des médailles durant le banquet, l'équipe
canadienne gagnante furent très chaleureusement applaudie et le
président de la NAA Mark Miller est venu personnellement nous
féliciter.

Hi Kathy,
I would like you posted this short message on the next Friday News. I
think we have to be very proud of what these three young Canadians
archers have done at the US Junior Championship.
On July 12 - 14 the 2002 US Junior Olympic National
Target Championships were held in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. Stéphanie
Girard (12 years old), Kristel Alain (14 years), Marie-Pier Beaudet
(15 years), all three member of the Canadian Excellence 2004
programme, attended this event as guests. Stéphanie and Kristel were
registered in cadet recurve division and Marie-Pier in junior recurve
division.
These three young Canadian archers impressed more than one American.
In the cadet recurve division with almost 30 archers registered
Kristel Alain ranked 5th in the qualification round and Stéphanie kept
herself in the middle. Marie-Pier Beaudet ranked 2nd in the junior
division qualification round. By the way, she shot a new cadet world
record at 50 meters, now at 320 only 2 points from the Canadian senior
record. There was official team match play, registered through FITA.
The three girls formed a Canadian team. A few hundred Americans came
to support their teams, and were astonished to see that the three
Canadians girls won all three of their team matches in a row. In their
final match they shot a score of 218 against the US junior team.
When the girls received their gold awards during the banquet, they
were applauded in a warm way. NAA president Mark Miller came to see us
and gave his personal congratulations.

Hugh MacDonald (BC) shot 1308 at the FITA in Burnaby
on Saturday, July 20, 2002. That makes him the 4th Canadian recurve
archer to shoot over 1300 in a registered FITA Star tournament. Hugh
sure deserves this score. He works really hard and has been sitting
just below it for a while!! (This performance will be verified by
co-ordinator Marthe Cusson and the presentation will be made at a
future date.)

M. Hugh MacDonald (C.-B.) a tiré un score de 1308 au tournoi FITA à Burnaby, C-B le 20 juillet, 2002. Il est seulement le quatrième archer à l'arc recourbé qui a battu le niveau 1300 dans un tournoi homologué à la FITA. Hugh vraiment mérite ce score. Il travaille assidûment et il tirait les scores justement un peu bas de ce niveau. (Ce performance doit être verifier par gestionnaire Mme. Marthe Cusson. 4. Call for 2003 World FITA target team leader and coach
Arthur Nault, FCA Vice-President and chairman of the High Performance Committee is calling for applications for the positions of team leader and team coach. Applications must be received by the FCA national office no later than October 31, 2002. The High Performance Committee will announce the support staff after the annual fall meeting.

Lou Lefaive
The Canadian sport community mourns the recent passing of Lou Lefaive, a key builder of Canadian sport over the last 30 years. Mr. Lefaive served twice as the Director of Sport Canada, in its founding years from 1968 until 1975 and again from 1978 until 1980. Lou had an exceptional ability to bring government and sport together, enabling the development of some of the most successful sports we play today.
Not only successful in his administrative sport duties, Lou was a true athlete and coach himself. He played semi-professional softball in Windsor, as well as football and basketball. After his career as an athlete, Lou turned to coaching basketball for two educational institutions in Ottawa. Lou was instrumental in the establishment of some of the major building blocks in the Canadian sport system. Lefaive's love for sport led him to be a successful player, coach, builder, and administrator. He will forever be remembered by his peers and co-workers, for helping to pave a smoother path for the development of Canadian sport.

Lou Lefaive
La communauté sportive canadienne pleure le récent décès de Lou Lefaive, un des grands bâtisseurs du sport canadien des 30 dernières années. M. Lefaive a été directeur de Sport Canada à deux reprises : pendant les années de fondation de l'organisme, de 1968 à 1975, puis de 1978 à 1980. Il possédait un talent exceptionnel pour réunir le gouvernement et les
milieux du sport, permettant ainsi le développement de certains des sports dans lesquels nous excellons aujourd'hui
En plus d'assumer efficacement ses fonctions administratives en matière de sport, M. Lefaive était lui-même un véritable athlète et entraîneur. Il a joué dans une ligue semi-professionnelle de softball à Windsor, ainsi qu'au football et au basket-ball. Après sa carrière d'athlète, il est
devenu entraîneur de basket-ball pour deux établissements d'enseignement à Ottawa.
M. Lefaive a grandement contribué à l'établissement de certains des éléments de base du système sportif canadien. Son amour du sport l'a poussé à devenir un excellent joueur, entraîneur, bâtisseur et administrateur. Ses amis et collègues se rappelleront à jamais de lui qui aura su paver la voie pour le développement du sport canadien.
