6. Canada Bids For 2007 Summer University Games

In Brussels, Belgium, a Canadian delegation will present the International University Sports Federation (FISU) a bid to stage the 2007 Summer Universiade in Saskatoon, SK. The Summer Universiade, also known as the Summer World University Games, were initiated in 1959 and are the world's second-largest multi-sport competition after the Olympics.

The University of Saskatchewan proposes to host the Games, which last year in Beijing attracted 4,484 athletes and 2,273 team officials from 133 countries. Universiade has been held twice in North America, including Edmonton, Alberta, in 1983 and Buffalo, NY, in 1993.

Well-Respected Sport Broadcasting Exec Jim Thompson Takes The Helm At Canadian Olympic Association / Un Cadre Bien Connu du Monde des Télécommunications Sportives Prend la Barre de l'Association Olympique Canadienne

TORONTO (January 29, 2002) - Well-known and respected Canadian sports broadcast executive Jim Thompson has been appointed the new Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Olympic Association (COA). The CEO position was left vacant February 1, 2001 with the sudden death of Carol Anne Letheren.

Mr. Thompson's appointment is effective March 4 and he will be located in the COA's Toronto office. He has spent his entire career in sports, joining CBC Television Sports in 1966 as a script assistant. In 2000 he retired as President of Netstar Sports Group, where he was responsible for TSN, RDS and Netstar Sales, when the company was acquired by CTV. Among his career highlights are CBC TV Executive Producer of the 1984 Olympic and Olympic Winter Games in Los Angeles and Sarajevo; Executive Producer, Sports, CBC British Columbia, and was the CBC's first Executive Producer of CBC Sport Weekend. He also was President and General Manager of TSN, where, in addition to programming, he was responsible for sales and marketing, promotion, technical operations, cable affiliate relations and advertising and public relations.

Mr. Thompson, who is well-known for his candor and straightforwardness. "And no one should under-estimate the opportunity that the COA has to make a real difference in the sport landscape of this country. With the new national sport policy under development, the Olympic Winter Games less than two weeks away, and a Canadian bid for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, the COA has a terrific opportunity to make a difference for high performance sport and athletes in Canada and to help high performance sport and athletes make a difference for Canada."

Born and raised in Collingwood and Toronto, Mr. Thomson is an avid curler, skier and golfer and a fan of all sports. He has also played an active role on a number of charitable boards and sports committees, including the Canadian Special Olympics (vice chair), the Hockey Hall of Fame, FIS Media and Television Committee and Toronto SkyDome. He and his wife Sheila have a son and daughter, Jake and Sam.

"If ever there was proof that something worth having is worth waiting for, the appointment of Jim Thompson as the new CEO of the COA is it," said COA President Mike Chambers. "His appointment follows an extensive search process. Given the unique nature of the COA - a national, private, not-for-profit sport organization with franchise rights to the world's most highly recognized brand, the Olympic Rings, many outstanding candidates were attracted to the position. When Jim threw his hat into the ring just before Christmas, it soon became clear that he was the best choice for the COA and our constituencies, particularly Canada's athletes and coaches. He has natural leadership qualities and credibility in sport, business and government. He has an innate appreciation for high performance sport and he has spent his entire career in the field, so he understands how sport operates. He is enormously well respected in the amateur and professional sport worlds, and in business and government."

Mr. Thompson noted that his first priority as CEO will be to meet with as many members of the sport community as possible - athletes and coaches, federations, training centers, and governments.

"I'm intrigued by the Vision for Sport that Mark Lowry and his staff have developed based on the board's view of the future of sport in Canada. It calls for Canada to be in the top 10 in Olympic results by the end of the decade. Well, we know where we are now and we know where we want to be, and I'm here to work with the COA and the rest of the sport community to figure out how we get there.

"The development of Canadian athletes, for example, is critical to the COA - the caliber of our Olympians is a direct reflection of our development system," Mr. Thompson stated. "We have to work together as a sport community to improve development and support athletes if we're going to see results and get our athletes onto the podium to receive gold medals. You don't get elite athletes without a comprehensive development system. The same principle applies," he added, "to coaching and to efficient and equitable funding."

Un Cadre Bien Connu du Monde des Télécommunications Sportives Prend la Barre de l'Association Olympique Canadienne

TORONTO (29 janvier 2002) - Jim Thompson, cadre bien connu et respecté du monde des télécommunications sportives, a été nommé chef de la direction de l'Association olympique canadienne (AOC). Ce poste était vacant depuis le décès soudain de Carol Anne Letheren, survenu le 1er février 2001.

M. Thompson entrera en fonctions le 4 mars et il travaillera au bureau de Toronto de l'AOC. Toute sa carrière a pour pivot le sport. Il a joint l'équipe des sports de la CBC Television en 1966 en qualité d'assistant à la production. Et quand il a pris sa retraite en 2000, au moment de l'acquisition de la compagnie par CTV, il occupait le poste de président du Netstar Sports Group, où il était responsable notamment de TSN, de RDS et de Netstar Sales. Les faits saillants de sa carrière incluent : chef de production à CBC TV pour la diffusion des Jeux olympiques de Los Angeles et des Jeux olympiques d'hiver de Sarajevo en 1984; chef de production, Sports, CBC British Columbia; et premier chef de production de Sport Weekend sur CBC. Il a aussi été président et directeur général de TSN, où ses responsabilités englobaient non seulement la programmation, mais aussi les ventes et le marketing, la promotion, les opérations techniques, les relations avec les stations affiliées ainsi que les relations avec les publicitaires et les relations publiques.

" Sa nomination est l'issue d'un vaste processus de recrutement. M. Thompson a souligné que sa priorité initiale en qualité de chef de la direction de l'AOC sera de rencontrer le plus grand nombre possible de membres de la communauté sportive- athlètes et entraîneurs, fédérations, centres d'entraînement et gouvernements.

"Je suis très intéressé par la Vision du sport que Mark Lowry et son équipe ont élaborée en se fondant sur la façon dont le conseil envisage l'avenir du sport au Canada. Selon cette vision, le Canada doit se ranger parmi les 10 meilleures nations sportives au monde d'ici la fin de la décennie. En d'autres termes, nous savons où nous sommes maintenant et la direction que nous voulons suivre, et je suis là pour faire en sorte, avec l'AOC et l'ensemble de la communauté sportive, que nous trouvions les moyens de nous rendre là où nous voulons aller.

Ainsi, le développement des athlètes est un point critique pour l'AOC - le calibre de nos athlètes olympiques est un reflet direct de notre système de développement. Nous devons faire front commun avec toute la communauté sportive pour améliorer le système de développement et appuyer les athlètes, si nous voulons obtenir les résultats escomptés et voir nos athlètes monter sur le podium pour y recevoir des médailles d'or. On ne peut espérer avoir des athlètes d'élite sans un système de développement exhaustif. Et le même principe vaut pour les entraîneurs et la mise en place d'un système de financement équitable et efficient ", a-t-il tenu à préciser.

  9. FITA call for coaches / FITA et les entraîneur(e)s (uniquement en anglais)

Aalborg Archery Club is one of the biggest clubs in Denmark with 80 members including 75% of the Danish elite. This club has the ambition to be even better, and has got some money to pay at guest-coach for 4 weeks from June 15 to July 15, 2002.

 

Aalborg Archery Club will pay all expenses such as travel, accommodation, car rent and a fair fee of approx. ~2500 US$. The task of the coach is simply to supervise the coaching, as the archers have summer holiday and practices 2 times daily, 5 times weekly.
