Report from the Masters Games in Melbourne Australia, October 7-13 by
G. Durward
(uniquement en anglais)
In case you want to have a look at some of the pictures we took on our Australia trip, check out:
(We just got back on Monday after a great trip, which included the World Field Championships in Canberra and the World Masters Games in Melbourne.)
Lynne and I have just returned from competing in the Masters Games in Melbourne. There were four events (FITA Field, FITA 18m Indoor, FITA Outdoor Target and IFAA Field) each with individual medals in age groups 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70+. In each event there were many equipment divisions which led to long medal ceremonies and lots of medals – much like at home! The emphasis at the Games is on participation and there were about 400 archers competing, mostly Australians. The largest men’s categories was mine – the 50-59 men Compound and the largest women’s category was the one Lynne competed in – 50-59 Compound.
All over 50 competitors in the Compound and the Recurve divisions competed for the FITA World Masters Championships medals in the Indoor, the Target and the FITA Field events. The top three scores were used to determine the Indoor and Field FITA medals and the top four shot off for the Target medals in a semi-finals and finals. Since competitors in different age groups shot different distances scores at 60 meters were used for all categories to determine which four would shoot off for the Target medals (Greg was third in the 50-59 group but was ranked 5th – one point out – on the 60m ranking).
Helen and Warran Buck were the only other Canadians there and they were competing in the 60-69 age group
Lynne won two FITA World Masters Silver medals – one in the Indoor Event and one in the FITA Field Event. In her age category, she also won Silver in the Indoor (of 14). She placed placed 5th (of 15) in the Outdoor Target and 4th (of 9) in the IFAA Field.
Greg won a bronze in his age category in the Outdoor Target Event (of 46). He placed 8th (of 45) in the Indoor, 5th (of 38) in the FITA Field, and 6th (of 32) in the IFAA Field.
Warran also won two FITA World Masters medals – Silver in the Indoor Event and Bronze in the FITA Field. He also won a Silver medal in his age category of the IFAA Field (of 12). He placed 6th (of 23) in the Outdoor Target.
Helen won Gold medals in her age category in the FITA Field (of 4) and in the IFFA Field (of 3) as well as a Silver medal in the Indoor (of 4). She placed 4th (of 5) in the Outdoor Target Event.
The Field venues were spectacular – right next to a huge free range zoological preserve and the Werribee Mansion. At one point we were shooting within 100 meters of rhinos, zebras, giraffes, and gazelles. Melbourners are proud of their weather where they claim they have four seasons in single day sometimes. It’s true as we learned on the first Target day where we started in wind and cold and rain and ended in warm sunshine. The FITA scores reflect the weather!
It was a great event and we learned that the World Masters Games will be in Edmonton in 2005 (they are every four years but they are changing to odd years). It has not yet been decided if Archery will be included in those Games.
Greg Durward
