The Dairy Farmers of Canada and the Canadian Olympic Association are pleased to invite you to a round table discussion concerning the financial support extended to our future Olympians.
To turn a talented youth into a serious pretender to Olympic glory, there is no alternative to a demanding training program and the opportunity to compete with the very best, often, and everywhere in the world. Needless to say, this does not come free. What are the practical consequences for young hopefuls and their parents? How does the situation of elite athletes in Canada compare with that of other countries? Are there solutions to tackle the lack of financial support? Should there be targets and priorities?
With the hope of providing answers to those questions, we have opted to invite you. Moreover, we have also asked panellists from all regions of the countries and from all corners of the world of amateur sports to debate the issues during a round table discussion. This event will take place on Wednesday, February 27, 2002, at the Delta Centre-Ville Hotel in Montreal. Athletes returning from Salt Lake City, Canadian Olympic Association officials and the new Secretary of State for Amateur Sport, the Honourable Paul DeVilliers, will be attending. For everyone who works hard to develop elite athletes in Canada, this is one meeting not to be missed.
Reminder:
Date: Wednesday, February 27, 2002 / Time: From 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Location: Delta Centre-Ville Hotel, 777 University Street, Montreal, Auditorium

Marie-Paule Heymans, mother of diver Émilie Heymans

9 Recurve archers from the Sri Lanka National Team are sponsored by the Olympic Solidarity for advanced training. The current average score of the archers is around 1100 points on a regular FITA Round.
An advanced English-speaking archery coach is needed during at least 2 weeks. The training course should take place during the first quarter of 2002. Airfare, food, accommodation are provided as well as per diem allowances (I don't know how much, usually it is US$ 35 per day).
If you are interested in this "mission", or if you know someone interested in it, please contact me. Please pass this call around.

9. Report on Continental Archery Seminar, Mexico City,
Jan 22-30, 2002 by G. Durward
(uniquement en anglais)
The seminar was sponsored by the Pan-American Sports Organization (PASO), the Mexican Olympic Committee and the Pan American Archery Confederation (I think – it was all a little confusing). Seminar sessions ran from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for nine days straight. Needless to say, we covered a lot of ground. The three presenters were Pascal Colmaire, Development Manager for FITA; Juan Carlos Holgado Romero, FITA Coaches Committee & Team Gold Medallist in Barcelona; and Matt Cleland, well-known U.S. compound archer.
We were housed and fed in the Mexican Olympic Committee training facility in Mexico City, where there were facilities for all Olympic Sports including a small FITA range. Our time was divided roughly equally between classroom work and field work with two sessions in the gym (one for an introduction to yoga and one on weight training). The facility was adequate, as was the food. Unfortunately the instructions that went out in English were incomplete and I was not aware that we had to bring our own towels, soap and shampoo. Toilet paper was available from a master roll at the controlled check-in desk at the dormitory. Luckily we found a WalMart close by and I was able to purchase towels and a private supply of TP.
The attendees were 28 people from 19 countries in the FITA Americas Region. Most spoke Spanish but there was a full-time translator available at each session. With Pascal’s first language being French, we had some interesting sessions! The experience level of the participants varied widely - from almost none to Level 4 coaching. Two participants had been shooting for less than a year and several came from countries with no program of coaching education or certification. Most were interested in recurve archery, although most countries did have compound shooters as well. I had numerous requests to make Canadian coaching materials available. A good number of participants were from countries in which there was not a single archery store. Some had no permanent archery facility at all.
The printed material was largely in Spanish, but I do have some documents in English, which I can make available for the cost of copying and postage to anyone interested. The following is a list of the handouts they provided:
- Compound Archery for FITA – Matt Cleland (English - 21 pages)
- Covers Equipment, Form, Practice, Physical Conditioning, Mental Training, Coaching Techniques, Tips for Winning
- Tiro con Arco – Juan Carlos Holgado (Spanish – 21 pages)
- Exercise Program – Pascal Colmaire (English - 14 pages)
- Stick figure drawings with barely readable hand-written
- French Test – ½ page in English on recurve tuning (also called “walk-back tuning”)
- Collection of short items on the following topics – Pascal Colmaire (English -30 pages)
(NOTE: Most of these articles are available through FCA's InfoTech bulletins. Purchase them in English or French from the FCA catalogue on the web site.
- Overall Training Plan – 3 pages
- Stretching for Archers – 1 page
- Strengthening Program – 2 pages
- Specific Physical Strength – 4 pages
- General & Shooting Body Balance Program - - 5 pages
- How to Train for Performance – 2 pages
- Dealing with Competitive Stress – 2 pages
- Technique Development – 6 pages
- Breathing – 2 pages
- Rhythm and Sequences – 5 pages
- The Follow-through – 2 pages
- Hidden Target Exercise – 3 pages
- Checking the String Clearance – 1 page
- Stable Aiming – 4 pages
- Ideal Performance State – 2 pages
- The Archer’s Concentration – 6 pages
- Starting Well a Tournament – 2 pages
- Stable Global Attention – 4 pages
- Performance Analysis Form – 1 page
- Misc Spanish Illustrated Notes – 60 pages
- Easton Tuning Seminar Notes – 20 pages
In addition, I have about 54 pages of my own handwritten notes that would be of limited use to anyone else since they are fairly cryptic and my handwriting is not very pretty!
One of the things we were requested to do at the seminar was to return to our countries and disseminate the information we received. Unfortunately, I don’t know how to this on the zero budget the FCA has for such a project. Any ideas are welcome.

10. Summer Camp For Girls (uniquement en anglais)
Camp Fernwood in Poland, Maine USA is seeking a highly motivated person to coach outdoor Olympic archery for the summer of 2002 (June 17th through August 17th). The successful candidate will be joining three other returning staff members teaching in an all-girls, eight-week program. Our facility accommodates a 70-meter range, modern cutting edge equipment and is a registered Junior Olympic Archery Development (J.O.A.D.) club, which is fully sanctioned by the National Archery Association. Class sizes range from ten to twenty archers. While Camp Fernwood is non competitive in nature, Fernwood Archery has evolved into a program that is not “typical” of a summer camp program. A majority of the campers compete throughout the year and even train at the Olympic Training Center in San Diego, California. Candidates with an NAA level II (or above) certification or equivalent will receive preference in the application process. Overseas staffs are also encouraged to apply. Pay is determined by age and experience and can be negotiated by contacting a director. Room and board is provided. This brief advertisement does little justice to an actual “Fernwood Experience”. Interested candidates that have questions/comments or wish to apply online may do so at: http://www.fernwoodcamps.com/Fernwood/Fernwood_Home_Page.html Questions can also be answered by calling Fritz Seving (Director) at 610-287-4174 or Josh Gill (Archery Dept. staff) at 207-647-5706.
