In Memory and Tribute

Joan McMahon Innes / Helen ‘Joan’ Innes

It is with great sadness and fond memories that the Executive and members of the ATAA extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Joan McInnes, who passed away Monday, December 31, 2001. Our hearts and thoughts are with Joan’s loving husband Chris, her beloved daughter Sherry and four cherished grandchildren.

Many knew Joan as Joan McMahon Innes, that terrific lady who was so involved in the archery community. Joan was dedicated to the Junior Archery Program; so much so that her vehicle was well recognized traveling everywhere, filled with “her” kids inside, all wanting to shoot. Many remember the time she worked so hard to organize a team of kids to go to the Nationals in Quebec, and boy! did those kids show Canada that she set quite a standard in coaching and development of young athletes.

Joan worked hard to make her Red Deer archery range well known and respected, and all who remember “The Archers’ Nook” will never forget it as a place where everyone was welcome.

Joan’s philosophy was one in which we can all take a lesson from. This dedicated lady never spoke a harsh word to or about others, welcomed everyone with a smile, was truly gracious, and never complained when faced with sometimes insurmountable odds. Her warmth, humor and courage are some of the qualities that attracted so many people to her. We will miss her tremendously, but we will always remember her with a smile.

In Joan’s memory, a donation has been made to the Canadian Cancer Society.

A Memorial Service was held at 4:00PM on Thursday, January 03, 2002 at Eventide Funeral Home, 4820 45th Street, Red Deer, Alberta ______________________________________________________________

3. 2002 FCA 3D Championships

The AANS web page will be the location for all information pertaining to the 3D Championships and this will up and running in February. Registrations can be undertaken by simply printing a copy of the registration form from the web site and mailing the required fees to the address on the form. All updates will be located here. We will have the host hotel, car rental agency, campgrounds and local B&B's available for the event in March and registrants will be required to book directly with the desired establishment.

Wanted: Let’s Get Moving! meeting organizers!

Every day in the newspaper, we read about children and youth. On some days, the stories are about the fine accomplishments of young people. On other days, we read about dangerous trends such as childhood obesity, the elimination of physical education in schools, the increase in violent crimes among youth, and the lack of affordable and accessible recreation and sport opportunities. It’s time to work together to reverse these trends! It’s time for Let’s Get Moving!

Let’s Get Moving! is a nationwide, community-based campaign that fosters multi-sector collaboration in support of quality daily physical education in schools and opportunities for all children and youth to participate in quality recreation and sport programs in the community.

Let’s Get Moving! was conceptualized in January 2001 by the Canadian Professional Coaches Association (CPCA), the professional arm of the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC). The campaign was launched in association with key stakeholder groups on October 19 at the 2001 Sport Leadership Conference in Mississauga, Ontario.

CPCA, in consultation with leaders from the health, education, recreation, and sport sectors, has developed a global position statement that will be a focal point for the campaign.

It is imperative for federal, provincial/territorial, and municipal governments to invest in the healthy development of young people by working together in partnership with leaders from the health, education, recreation, and sport sectors to ensure that all children and youth are provided with quality daily physical education in schools and opportunities to participate in quality recreation and sport programs in the community.

On its own, this statement can do nothing. We need local action. More specifically, we would like you to organize and host a half-day, cross-sector Let’s Get Moving! meeting in your community to discuss what can be done collectively to improve the health and well-being of young people in your community.

CPCA is hoping that leaders from across the country will host community-based meetings as a first step towards opening up some meaningful dialogue between the various stakeholder groups.

If you decide you want to organize a meeting in your area, please let us know by completing the confirmation form located in the Let’s Get Moving! section of the Coaching Association of Canada’s Web site: www.coach.ca. It is important for CPCA to know who is organizing the meetings and where they will be held.

Who should attend? Invite your member of Parliament, provincial member, mayor, city councillors, school board trustees, and leaders from the health, education, recreation, and sport sectors. You may also want to invite parents who are passionate about the issues.

CPCA has posted information on the Web site that will help you to facilitate your meeting – everything from sample invitations to a suggested process for facilitating your meeting. The site will also contain research findings that demonstrate why we need to take action now. Once your meeting is confirmed, David Carmichael will be communicating with you to help you prepare for the meeting.

Recherchons des organisateurs et des organisatrices pour les rencontres Faut que ça bouge! Nous lisons chaque jour dans les journaux des articles sur les enfants et les jeunes. Ces articles relatent parfois leurs réussites et, à d’autres occasions, déplorent certaines tendances dangereuses, comme l’obésité chez les enfants, l’élimination des cours d’éducation physique dans nos écoles, l’augmentation du nombre de crimes avec violence chez les jeunes et le manque d’occasions abordables ou d’accessibilité à la pratique de loisirs et du sport. Il est temps de s’unir pour renverser la vapeur! Faut que ça bouge! Faut que ça bouge! est une campagne communautaire, à l’échelle nationale, préconisant une collaboration multisectorielle en vue d’appuyer la participation quotidienne dans les écoles à des cours d’éducation physique de qualité et l’accès pour les enfants et les jeunes à des programmes de loisirs et de sport de qualité dans leurs communautés.

La campagne Faut que ça bouge! a été créée en janvier 2001 par l’Association canadienne des entraîneurs professionnels (ACEP), la division professionnelle de l’Association canadienne des entraîneurs (ACE). La campagne a été lancée en collaboration avec des groupes d’intervenants clés le 19 octobre, lors de la conférence Leadership sportif 2001 qui a eu lieu à Mississauga, en Ontario.

L’ACEP, en consultation avec des responsables des secteurs de la santé, de l’éducation, des loisirs et du sport, a élaboré une proposition qui est le point central de la campagne.

Il est essentiel que les gouvernements fédéral, provinciaux, territoriaux et municipaux, investissent dans le sain développement de la jeunesse, en travaillant de concert avec les responsables des secteurs de la santé, de l’éducation, des loisirs et du sport, afin que chaque enfant, chaque adolescent et chaque adolescente puisse suivre, quotidiennement, des cours d’éducation physique de qualité dans son école et participer dans sa propre communauté à des programmes de loisirs et de sport de qualité.

Mais dire, ce n’est pas faire. Il faut mettre en marche une telle politique au niveau local. Bref, nous vous invitons à organiser et à présenter une rencontre intersectorielle Faut que ça bouge! d’une demi-journée qui aura pour but de discuter de stratégies collectives visant l’amélioration de la santé et du bien-être des jeunes de votre communauté.

L’ACEP souhaite que des chefs de file de partout au pays organisent de telles rencontres au sein de leur communauté et fassent ainsi le premier pas vers un dialogue signifiant entre les divers groupes intéressés.

Si vous décidez d’organiser une rencontre dans votre région, nous vous invitons à nous en informer en remplissant le formulaire de confirmation que vous trouverez sur le site Web de l’Association canadienne des entraîneurs (www.coach.ca), sous la section Faut que ça bouge! L’ACEP tient à savoir qui organisera ces rencontres et où elles auront lieu.

Qui devrait assister à cette rencontre? Le site présentera également les résultats de diverses recherches démontrant pourquoi nous devons agir dès maintenant. Lorsque vous nous aurez confirmé la tenue d’une rencontre, David Carmichael communiquera avec vous afin de vous aider à vous préparer.
