The philosophy behind the numbers used for setting the scores for Outdoor Gold, Red and Blue-ranking criteria has changed. Previously, the High Performance Committee arbitrarily selected numbers for each level. They have now decided that the criteria should be based on actual scores shot at World Championships. In most cases the scores from the previous two World Championships have been averaged and then rounded. In most cases they were rounded down. Gold squad is set to 16th place and Red squad is set to 64th place at the World Championships. Blue squad is 5% less than Red squad.
16th place was selected because it is a level that is used by Sport Canada for many of their programs and by the Canadian Olympic Association for setting Olympic criteria. 64th place was used because the cut takes place at 64th for the elimination round.
These numbers are for 2001 only. After the 2001 World Championships they will be reviewed using the results from the 2001 Championships and will stay the same for 2002 and 2003.
In the Senior Compound category, the results from 2 World Championships could not be used because the 1997 Championship was scored using the inner 10. We experimented with various ways to convert the inner ten scores but in the end we have used just the results from the 1999 World Championships. After the 2001 Championships, the scores from both 1999 and 2001 will be used.
In the Senior Ladies Compound and the Junior Compound Men there were not 64 competitors. The cut at both those events was at 32nd place so the scores from 32nd place were used for Red Squad.
In the Junior Compound Ladies there were not 32 competitors, so we selected an appropriate number for Red Squad.
In the Cadet category there are no World Championship results to use. In this case we have taken the Junior red squad and made that Cadet Gold squad. Red squad is then Gold squad minus 5% and Blue squad is Gold squad minus 10%.
It is interesting to see that in the Compound categories almost all the criteria are lower than the 2000 criteria. The men senior and junior recurve criteria are almost the same as 2000. The major change is for the recurve women both senior and junior. This is not really a surprise since we have held the ladies' scores at probably too low a level for many years.
This new system will give archers an idea of where they are relative to what other archers in the world are doing and help them prepare and strive to be competitive.

The level of competition was extremely good during the elimination rounds at the FITA indoor world championships. There were several shoot-off tiebreakers. Apparently, the noise was deafening! For full details, check out their web site.
