"Playing by the Rules" An Informational and Educational Event Regarding
Drugs and Supplements in Sport Hosted by the National Sport Centre Calgary
September 11-12, 2001
Overview
The National Sport Centre Calgary (NSCC) will be hosting a series of workshops, seminars and panel discussions focused on the ethical and legal use of drugs and supplements in sport. The primary goal of this program is to educate all individuals involved in the process of recommending, prescribing and taking sport and health related substances so that they can make informed decisions. This includes athletes, coaches and the entire support staff team. The following is a list of the programs that will be included in the event over the two-day period.
1. "Taking-It" This program delivers a model in which athletes who are contemplating supplementation, can make educated and informed decisions about whether or not to take sport and health related substances and at what dosage level. The program is simple and easy to understand, focussing on the key points that need to be considered in the decision-making process. The program will be conducted by Dr. Jonathan Geiger and Dr. Dean Kriellaars from the Centre for Substance Use in Sport and Health (SUSH), based at the University of Manitoba.
2. Drugs and Supplements in Sport This is a regular NSCC workshop aimed at promoting drug-free athletic performances and fair competition. The workshop focuses on a variety of topics including IOC banned substances, penalties and consequences of doping infractions, the athletes role and responsibilities regarding doping controls and the effects that certain drugs and supplements have on the body. The workshop will be conducted by J.R. Smith and Kelly-Anne Carter-Erdman from the NSCC.
3. Care Mart Professional Development Program These are two separate evening seminars for selected Care Mart Pharmacists. The two seminars provide the pharmacists with an overview of the doping program as well as a training session on banned substances. The goal of this seminar is to help build a local expert resource network that can provide athletes with educated information pertaining to medical and health related substances. This is part of an ongoing pilot process to develop more local resources and expertise in this field. The seminars will be conducted by Paul Melia, Chief Operating Officer from the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES).
4. Panel Discussion We will be holding an open panel discussion that will provide an opportunity to address any questions related to the topics covered throughout the workshops. The expert panel will include physicians, doping control officers, pharmacists and nutritionists.

Outdoor Target Archery Rounds
Motion 55
To allow the World Championship Organising Committee at it's discretion, to use either the FITA Round or the 70 Meter Round as the Ranking/Qualification Round in FITA World Championship Target Archery events. The determination of which round (either the FITA Round or the 70 Meter Round) would have to be made and announced at least one year prior to the event to allow competing teams the time necessary for preparation.
Reason:
The size of the tournament, that is, the number of competitors, has placed enormous strain on an organising committee to stage properly a FITA World Championship event. This amendment would allow an organising committee the option of using the 70 meter round, at it's discretion, prior to the elimination and finals rounds. This amendment would allow more Member Associations to bid for FITA World Championship events since the complications and size of the field/number of competitors can be more easily handled with less cost to the organisers.
Ed: If you wish to express your opinion on the motion, contact FCA's VP International, Mr. Al Wills
