Info E-Mail Les Nouvelles/News le 21 Sept, 2001
Greetings/Bonjour
There are only two items this week. This bulletin recaps the information from September 17, and then adds the latest reports. Our compound men's team just missed moving on. And, our Records Co-ordinator, Christiane Murphy, has been busy, and efficient, as usual. Please note that most of the team will be back in Canada on September 23 or 24. Don't forget to welcome them back home!

From Dave Dalziel:
Hi everyone,
Today was the opening ceremonies for the World Championships and to say the Chinese can put on a show is an understatement. We left the hotel around 6:00 right in rush hour and in a city of 13 million people rush hour is grid lock. Well not for us. At every single intersection there was a cop stopping traffic. There was not a person on the road in front of us the entire way to the stadium. Where the busses could enter a freeway, the police had every exit and entrance closed. At one point we drove on a 6-lane freeway all alone while the other side was backed up as far as you could see. And every entrance to that free way was blocked for miles. It was absolutely amazing. It was like Beijing stopped so we could get to the stadium.
The ceremonies themselves were the usual dignitaries and important people speaking, and at the end for entertainment a group of young kids with fans and drums did an amazing dance. It was really enjoyable. Canada also had the best uniforms by far.
Tomorrow is first day of competing wish me luck.
Dave

Hello Kathy,
China (at least this area) has many Internet cafés and access to computers. It is very cheap, about 1$CDN per hour. The only problem is this small Internet café, which has about 25 computers, has been discovered by all the athletes here for the tournament. Both the official hotels are within a 5-minute walk of here. I had hoped to have this off to you before you got to work, but team meetings and the excitement of a near world record by a Canadian had to take precedence!!!
I must start off with an update from Sunday, which was opening ceremonies. For some reason they were held in a large gymnasium way on the other side of Beijing rather than the field where we all were! They bussed us from our hotels under police escort. That was impressive enough. Imagine our shock when we looked ahead our bus (which was the lead bus) and saw they had cleared the streets ahead of us also. We were even more surprised when we pulled onto the freeway and it was empty just for us! The ceremonies were graciously short with performances of dance and martial arts performed to music by over 100 Chinese children.
Day one dawned gloomy and rainy in the forecast, as the compound men readied for practice the rain started pouring down. Luckily the entire area behind the shooting line (70 butts in 6-metre lanes) has a high metal canopy about 10 metres wide over it. So we were spared getting wet. Ed had time to construct his patented scope cover that looks somewhat like a cut up plastic cup, but it wasn't required. The rain stopped and that was it, no wind either! The guys shot their hearts out and all finished around 50th place, all slightly below their averages.
That brought lunch and the arrival of the recurve guys and the compound gals. The sun was trying to break through with a temp about 21C. It is a bit of a challenge for the support staff as the gals are on targets 2 - 5 and the guys 64-69! I was with the guys when Denise stopped by to report that Dawn had shot a 60 on her first end, so we know where that put her on the leader board! She was to stay there for the rest of the day, missing the 70-metre world record by 1 point. From there on she put on a shooting lesson for the many world record holders shooting here! She finished strongly in first, only dropping off for 2 agonizing ends because of a input error to the scoring computers!
Not so positive for the recurve men, first end they were all around 75th and it didn't get better. They worked very hard and poured their souls into their shooting, but it wasn't to be, their averages were just not good enough!
Day 2 - this city has a sky line. We hadn't noticed before because of the smog and low cloud. But today we could see the entire countryside and buildings we couldn't see before!
The compound guys continued shooting around their averages, with Greg in a bit of difficulty he couldn't get out of. When the dust had settled Richard, Ed and Phil had shot around their averages and made the cut, Greg just missing. They are strong for their team placing however!
Then it was back to the Dawn show! She only managed a great 50, feeling she could have shot a lot better (!!!!) then burned up 30 with a 357. 4 personal bests and 4 Canadian records and soooo close to the world record, but who is complaining - a 1391 WOW!!!
Unfortunately there was little good news for the recurve men, although they continued to work hard and try everything they just kept slipping. The good news is they didn't give up and all finished strong, but all missed the cut!
As you can imagine it was a jovial bunch at the team meeting. It is so gratifying to see how many archers congratulate the first place finisher and the number of compliments she received from all archers!
Tomorrow, it is shoot time. We are all ready. I will attempt to update you as much as possible on the archers themselves and how we are all doing. The scores are on FITA's website, so I will not reproduce them here.
We are all well. Greg had a bit of a bug a few days ago, but it was cleared up overnight. Everyone is feeling well and getting along fantastically. The team is the most cohesive I have ever traveled with and are a real joy to be with and lots of fun! They support each other and work well together. The kind words from all of you have been encouraging and are appreciated. Unfortunately, by the time we get any as a result of this email, it will be too late. As we are just heading to bed now and then another full day on the field, it will be this time tomorrow (10PM) before we are checking mail again.
Overall this has been a very positive experience for me.
Cheers
Al (Wills), FCA President and World Team Manager

From/de: Al Wills
Well, the dream is over! It was great while it lasted! There is no joy in Mudville, at least Beijing for Canadian Archers.
Today opened full of optimism. We managed to get Dawn to be able to practice on her butt during her bye and Lillian shot very well in her first match. Lynne had some bad arrows that her opponent capitalised on and was done. When it came to the 1/8, neither could get going. Dawn's opponent started slow also, but capitalised in the second end. Lillian's opponent shot a 57 on her first end and never looked back.
The men also had a run of luck. Phil lost by an arrow call by a judge and Ed went through 2 tie-breakers, but in the end, we couldn't get a break. Richard made it through his first match, but met a very hot Brit and we were heading for the bus.
Actually it was to the practice range as they all want a team medal very badly. They are hungry! All are down, but in good spirits. This continues to be a great team, very supportive and patient of each other and work together well.
Wish today's news was better, but this has been a fine chapter in Canadian Archery!!
That's it for now!
Al

Signing off from Beijing / Le dernier bulletin de Beijing
Hi Kathy,
Well it looks like this will be the last one from Beijing, although I will check again tomorrow for anything from today. As I have it figured this will get to you early AM on Friday, so I can get one last update to you. Please send the info email to this address also!
Everyone is fine. The team is disappointed in their shooting, but recognise the level of competition that is here. They all continue to get along fabulously and have been doing lots of cheering for the finals rounds. The last few days, when the competition is over, the Canadians have seen lots of shopping, sightseeing and socializing with other archers. The team is really well liked.
Being with this team has been a pleasure for me! All Canadians should be proud of them.
Here is a rumour: FITA may be considering adding the peep sight to recurve bows. At the very least they are interested in feed back on that subject. How is that for 'out of the blue' For those of us who remember, that was George Helwig's (USA) dream!!
So this is signing off from Beijing - it has been an honour to be here for Canada!
Al Wills, FCA Team Manager
