Greetings/Bonjour

Sadly, there is only one topic of conversation this week. Please excuse the brevity of this message. The images of this week's terror will remain with us forever. They are a permanent part of our lives. Below you will find messages from our team in Beijing before and after the World Trade Centre was destroyed. Some of our team members were worried, and of course, they are all in disbelief. They are following events via television on CNN.

FITA Congress has begun as usual, with a minute of silence for the victims. (See Al Wills' reports below.). Also, the members of the US team were grounded in Chicago on Tuesday, and have since been told to go back home. Despite this, the World Championships will continue as another gesture to show that terrorism, and those who perpetrate these actions, can not hold us hostage.

News from Beijing (written by Dave Dalziel and Al Wills) (uniquement en anglais)

(Sunday, September 9, 2001)

Hi Everyone

Well I hope everything is going good back home wherever you are. I am used to Joan writing the updates, so if I seem to be slacking some days I'm sorry, and if these e-mails suddenly stop, it might mean I have shot badly.

Hugh, Lillian, and I arrived in Beijing yesterday around 5:00pm. The flight was pretty uneventful, other then the fact that it was 11 and a half hours of being squished beside Hugh MacDonald (Hugh is 6'4"). We flew over the northern part of the ocean and it was a really clear day so we could look out and see all the icebergs floating around. We also got to see all the different land we flew over like the mountains and all the gigantic cities. It was the first time I have ever flown when it was so clear it really gives you an unbelievable perspective on how big Earth really is and how much unused land there is.

Today I was awake by 4:00am! At about 8:00 Lillian, Hugh and I met to get some breakfast. I have to say the food is not as bad as I thought it would be but I did eat something yesterday they labeled as chicken. I don't think it was chicken. Needless to say, I didn't finish it. I also found out they don't take the bones out of the fish. I learnt that one the hard way to.

Today Lillian Hugh and I are going to the field to check it out, then we will just hang out at the hotel for the rest of the day waiting for Shawn and Phil to arrive. The rest of the team comes in in the next few days. We didn't travel together. Tomorrow we have a trip to the Great Wall of China booked so I better take my camera for this one.

That's about it for today so I hope everyone is doing well and don't be worried about replying. There is not much to do around here so I should be on the Internet a lot. And don't be critical of my spelling. I don't spell check, Al. (But Kathy Millar does. I saved you.)

Talk to everyone later,

Dave

P.S. Keith from Ireland told me there is a McDonald's down the street so I WILL find it this afternoon.

Hi everyone

Well, I have done enough tourist stuff to last me a lifetime in China. Yesterday we spent the morning at the range just walking around checking out the facility. It is one of the nicest fields I've ever shot on. It is a permanent field which is very nice because the overhang that supplies the shade is also permanent and it is very big with tons of room behind the shooting line. It gave plenty of room for teams to walk around and not get in each others way, but still stay protected from the elements.

After lunch Hugh, Lillian, 3 Irish archers and myself went to the Beijing zoo. It was within walking distance of the hotel. I really wanted to see the giant Pandas, and that was the first place we went when we got there. I could not believe the personalities of the different bears. One was sitting by the door where the food comes in, and he was chowing down. 2 more were lazing around in the trees getting some sleep, and 2 others were playing down below. It's hard to imagine that these are wild animals. The black and white coloring, and their actions, make them look like humans in bear suits. We walked around the zoo for quite a bit more and watched many different animals. It was definitely my full fill of Chinese animals. When we got back to the hotel Shawn and Phil were there. Their flight was pretty uneventful.

We left for the Great Wall around 7:30 am. That may seem early but we were all up since about 4:00 anyway. I am glad I came early its going to take the best part of a week to get use to this time change. The Great Wall of China has to be one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in my life. There is no way to fathom that people actually built this thing. It is over 6700km long, 10 to 12 feet wide and as high as 50 feet in some parts. The wall was built over some of the roughest mountains around and it doesn't go around the mountains it goes up, you definitely had to be in shape to walk the Wall. At some points you were going up stairs and you could reach out in from of you about 3 feet and touch the on-coming steps. It was really steep. I learned some amazing things about the Wall and Chinese culture and one thing learned, and you could see, was that every stone used to make the wall had a stamp-like mark on it. This mark was the name of the person that put that stone in place. The reason for the marks is that if the wall ever fell down they could find the badly placed stone and know whose fault it was. That person was killed, and if that person was already dead the symbol represented his family, and they were killed. That is an interesting way to promote good workmanship! We left the Great Wall and went to the ancient tombs. They are 120 km squared of underground tombs and tunnels. Needles to say, I've seen enough and I am ready to get shooting.

Everyone else got in today and we are going to practice tomorrow. It will be nice to get into a bit of a training routine.

Talk to ya later,

Dave

(September 12) From Al Wills

Hi Kathy,

I have heard NOTHING about any thought of canceling these championships. The attitude I am hearing is that if we allow this to effect us in anyway, then these miscreants have won - I for one am not willing to say that!!! Many people are very upset, but I don't think canceling has been considered at all. I will make a more concerted effort to check email at least daily. Funny, I am just finishing my day as you are starting!

Congress starts tomorrow, so I'm not sure when I can check. I will keep you apprized. I, and many of our team, have been spending quite a bit of time with Mark Miller, NAA's new President. He is very cooperative and happy to have us to talk to! He was most appreciative to know he could contact you if required, but it was not necessary as they had a good contact with Colorado right away. They have left the decision for the team to come if they want (and can). It looks quite doubtful right now. Who knows I have been in touch with our embassy and they know where I am if they need to contact me

(September 13) From Al Wills:

Day one of congress is over, mostly procedural stuff so far. No bid for 2003, but looks like it will be the US. Turkey is a possibility if no one else bids. Jim (Easton) and Mark (Miller) figured it would be one of 5 US cities, but I don't know what the 5 are. Maybe Acapolco for indoor 2005, Germany for outdoor 2007, Jr. World 2002 CZE (5-9 Aug) (terrible dates, at the same time as our annual events), World Field 2004 CRO 1st week July, World Indoor 2003 FRA 4-9 Mar - World Field 2006 SWE Gotenborg.

Not much else interesting. We never considered canceling the event. A moment of silence was given for the US and a letter of sympathy from Congress to the NAA president. Everyone is still in shock with the gathering news. We are getting a lot of CNN etc on the TV so we are pretty well up on what is going on!

According to Mark Miller, the entire US team has returned to their homes!! We will miss them!

(September 14) from Dave Dalziel

Hi Everyone,

It's been a while since wrote, with the U.S. thing going on everything at the championships seemed to have slowed down a bit. The American team was to leave the morning of the attacks but obviously there planes were grounded. The rumor going around here is that they are doing everything to try to come and compete but it doesn't look good.

Anyway to some brighter news, shooting is going really good. I have gotten on a bit of a schedule and I am adjusting to the time. Yesterday, Phil, Shawn, Ed and I went to the silk markets. If you have never heard of these before, it is like all black market brand name clothes. I should let you go. The internet is a little more expensive then I thought. Official practice is tomorrow and we start shooting the day after.

Update from Al Wills September 14

Hi

FITA Congress is just over, thought I'd give you a quick update. Yesterday was most frustrating as we mostly spent time on constitutional (boring) matters. Today we got through the entire agenda, unbelievable, as it may seem. Highlights are:

The 90-metre FITA round stays. It was a very emotional debate and was obviously going to fail so the movers withdrew the motion. Too bad as it would have been nice to see on record how conclusively it would have failed by! We used an electronic voting system that was VERY efficient especially for the elections. There were a few hiccups, but it was impressive. The system belongs to the IOC and cost about 4K$ for 2 days!!

Don Lovo stepped down from all FITA committees and was awarded an honorary Vice Presidency for life. Nancy Littke was elected to the FITA Medical Committee. No other Canadians were running.

The inner ten for indoor was almost gone, but no one could come up with a suitable tie-breaker method for all the ties that would certainly come (inside out scoring was considered, but rejected).

The first motion to be considered was #39, which made congress only responsible for 'laws' not bylaws and the vast majority of motions were by laws, so not covered by Congress. That includes most of Canada's motions. That does not mean they were defeated, but that Council will discuss them in December.

Cubs are now recognised by FITA and records will be kept for Masters. The World Masters Games in Australia next year will be the 'over 50' Masters world archery championships. (In other words, FITA will recognise the over-50 division as the World Masters Champion).

So that is all I have for today, I did not see the team today, if I do later, I'll try and send an update. We are all still fine and all is going well. China is a wonderful country and the people are friendly and nice - the city is fine and food good.

2. CCES

This Advisory Note is part of an ongoing series to inform Canadian athletes, coaches, medical and paramedical staff and sport governing bodies on the use of non-pharmaceutical products including herbal preparations, nutritional products and other dietary supplements.

The CCES is very concerned about the number of athletes who are prepared to take dietary supplements with little knowledge of what real (as opposed to claimed) benefits they provide and whether or not they contain banned substances.

The Canadian Policy on Doping in Sport defines "doping" to include "the presence in the body of Banned Substances as determined by a Positive Test Result." Athletes are responsible for all substances found in their bodies even if consumed unintentionally or unknowingly. A Doping Infraction will be declared even if the banned substance enters an athlete's body through use of dietary supplements.

THE CONTENTS AND LABELLING OF DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS ARE UNREGULATED

Dietary supplements can contain banned substances. Regulation of dietary supplements in Canada and elsewhere is limited. It does not guarantee the content and accurate labelling of dietary supplements. The contents of particular products may change from batch to batch. Labels do not always indicate all of the ingredients. Nor do they always do so in a way that identifies banned substances. It is not possible for the CCES or any other organization to guarantee that all the ingredients have been listed on the packaging and/or whether the composition may vary during production from batch to batch, without notice. Athletes use dietary supplements at their own risk of testing positive and committing a doping infraction.

The connection between dietary supplements and positive test results for banned substances such as ephedra and nandrolone has been widely reported for a number of years. The CCES has issued four previous Advisory Notes concerning the risks of dietary substances. High-profile international athletes in a number of sports have tested positive because they have used dietary supplements. Athletes (and their coaches, trainers and doctors) can no longer credibly claim ignorance of the risks of positive test results due to use of dietary supplements.

THERE IS LITTLE SCIENTIFIC PROOF THAT DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS IMPROVE ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE

Very few claims of enhanced performance through supplement use are backed up by valid research, while some supplements can actually have adverse effects.

Good marketing is not a guarantee of a good product. Remember that a primary motivation for most people wishing to sell dietary supplements is to make a profit.

Appropriate training and diet are the key ingredients to maximizing performance.

THE WORLD ANTI-DOPING AGENCY (WADA) HAS WARNED AGAINST THE USE OF DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS

The WADA recently warned against the use of so-called "nutritional substances" such as dietary supplements:

NUTRITIONAL SUBSTANCES

Nutritional Supplements are being increasingly used worldwide in the sports community.

In sports subjected to drug testing, the ingestion of these supplements pose a special risk because they may contain or be contaminated with substances that are specifically banned by most sporting bodies, including the Olympic Movement Anti-Doping Code.

As long as the production and sale of such supplements cannot be impeded and as long as their purity cannot be guaranteed, as is the case with prescriptive drugs, the risk of testing positive in a doping test must be borne by the consumer.

Therefore, e.g., a positive doping test for nandrolone can result from the ingestion of its precursors. Although this may be an explanation, it cannot stand as a defensive excuse for the offence, which is one of strict liability.

Please remember that athletes always bear the ultimate responsibility for the products they ingest. Should you require further information related to this Advisory Note, please contact the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport at:
