New Product Release
CANBOW FOR TARGET AND 3D
The Canbow Skills Programme is an existing tool used by many clubs across Canada to encourage novice archers as they develop their target archery skills. There are 4 skill levels, each with several badges awarded for increases in proficiency. The novice archer is required to answer knowledge questions about sport safety and equipment maintenance before national skill certificates are awarded.
FCA is proud to introduce two exciting new developments in the Canbow Programme.
1. The revised Canbow Programme will offer a greater number of skill awards at the more advance levels. There will be changes to the knowledge component as well.
2. The new 3D Canbow Programme offers a separate skills and knowledge programme for indoor and outdoor 3D. New badges and wall chart for the 3D component of the Canbow Program have been designed. The Canbow guidebook is in the final stages of revision and ready for release.
Both programmes will offer:
A guidebook including information on how to safely run the instructional programme as well as an illustrated outline of the 10 steps to good shooting and a condensed FCA Rules book
A wall display chart to display the badges
Four levels of badges and national certificates
Individual report cards to keep track of each archer's progress through the programme
Start-up kits at $69.95
The Canbow starter kit includes a program information booklet, 10 wall charts and 10 badges for each of the first level awards. Additional badges, booklets and charts can be purchased as needed from the FCA Distribution Centre. Call 1-800-511-9999

3. Championnat national de tir à l’arc 2001-coupe Fred Usher nouveau format pour la composition des équipes
(English version follows)
Afin de promouvoir la participation des Équipes Provinciales lors du Championnat National qui se tiendra à Winnipeg cet été, la Fédération Canadienne des Archers propose une nouvelle méthode de composition pour les Équipes participantes à la Coupe Fred Usher.
Présentement, les règlements rédigeant la sélection des membres de l’Équipe pour la Coupe Fred Usher sont obscurs, difficiles d’interprétation et maintes fois, les provinces ont de la difficulté à trouver des d’archers qui rencontrent tous les critères résultant ainsi à une composition disparate des équipes.
Pour 2001, la FCA utilisera un système de ¨¨points bonus¨¨ au lieu d’un ¨¨système par quota¨¨.
Voici les condition d’appartenance à une Équipe :
1)Archers de tous âges, sexes ou divisions (recourbé ou arc à poulie).
2)Tous les membres doivent résider dans la même province.
3)Chaque membre de l’Équipe doit tirer dans la catégorie(âge) et la division (recourbé ou arc à poulie) dans laquelle il/elle s’est inscrite pour la FITA.
Le pointage d’Équipe sera calculé selon le total de tous ses membres PLUS les points bonus selon la composition de l’Équipe.
Les points bonus sont comme suit :
a) 5 points pour chaque archer féminin ou archer en fauteuil roulant
b) 7 points pour chaque archer de division recourbé
c) 4 points pour chaque archer de la division poulie aux doigts
d )2 points pour chaque archer Junior ou Maître
e) 5 points pour chaque archer Cadet ou Cub(benjamin)
Un membre individuel de l’Équipe peut valoir plusieurs points de bonus (e.g. une femme de division recourbé = 13)
L’allocation des points bonus est basée sur une analyses des pointages tirés lors des deux derniers Championnat Canadien. Les provinces pourront alors sélectionner leurs équipes en fonction de la performance des archers dans la division et catégorie respective. Par exemple, un cadet instinctif peut apporter autant de points bonus à l’Équipe que tout autre membre de cette province.
Si ce système de points bonus connaît du succès à Winnipeg, il sera adopté pour les futurs Championnats Nationaux. Des modifications peuvent être nécessaires et seront alors apportés. NEW FRED USHER CUP TEAM COMPOSITION AT 2001 NATIONAL ARCHERY CHAMPIONSHIPS
The FCA wishes to announce a new way to increase provincial team participation during the Fred Usher Cup competition this summer in Winnipeg.
Presently, the rules for selecting team members for the Fred Usher Cup are difficult to follow and often teams have a hard time finding a combination of shooters that satisfy the requirements, resulting in odd composite teams.
For 2001, FCA will use a "bonus system" rather than a "quota system". A team may consist of archers of any age or sex and shooting in any equipment division. All team members must be from the same province. Each team member must shoot in the age and division in which he/she registered for the FITA target event.
A team's score will be calculated as its actual score PLUS the following bonus points depending on the make-up of the team:
Add:
- 5 points for each female or wheelchair shooter
- 7 points for each recurve shooter
- 4 points for each compound fingers shooter
- 2 points for each Junior or Master
- 5 points for each Cadet or Cub
A single team member can get more than one kind of bonus points (e.g. a female recurve shooter = 13).
The bonus points are based on an analysis of scores shot at the last two Canadian Championships. They are designed so provinces will select team members based on how well an archer performs within his/her age/sex/division. For example, a Barebow cadet can contribute as much to a team as any other team member, when his/her bonus points are included.
If this bonus system is successful in Winnipeg, it will be used in all future Championships, with modifications if necessary. To add your input or support to this new proposal, contact both Greg Durward and Bruce Savage

You said that late fees now apply for people registering for the Target Championships. The tournament website conflicts with this. The due date for registration quite clearly says July 15.
Registration Deadlines (Registration)
The Target Championships will include the International Format and due to the extra paperwork this involves, please note the strict registration deadline for Target and Field events is JULY 15TH. The registration deadline for 3-D is July 30th.

11. Batalla de Carabobo by/de Shawn Riggs (uniquement en anglais)
Hi everyone,
This is an update from Hugh, Al, and Shawn in Venezuela at the Batalla de Carabobo tournament. Hugh´s at the keyboard, but it´s a communal message, so
enjoy!
The trip started on Friday for Hugh and on Saturday for Shawn and Al. After fairly typical airline troubles, Hugh arrived in Venezuela on Saturday evening at 9 local time (EST). Shawn et Al had other typical airline troubles and instead of landing at 10 PM Saturday, they landed at 1:30 AM Sunday. After clearing customs, we were ready to leave the airport at around 2:30 AM. It was an exciting drive through the hilly (small mountains for Shawn, but he´s shorter than the other two) countryside in the dark. For some reason (not apparent to us) the driver would occasionally slow down, or flash his high-beams. At any rate, we arrived at around 5:30 AM on Sunday morning at the Villa Olympic.
We slept-in a bit and headed out to the range for about noon on Sunday. We talked to some friends and saw who was shooting. Then we went out looking for water and food. We´d missed breakfast, so we got directions to the local mall (where we´re writing from now). We got food and water and we were ready for the day. So we went back to the field and shot some in the afternoon. Afternoon/evening fletching finished off the day and we were off to bed early. The rooms are a little suspect: there is no hot water, the beds are a little small, and there is an orange molding in the air-conditioning duct. But it´s nice enough to stay in. It´s a good place to sleep when the rowdy cyclists aren´t partying.
Monday we went out to the range for official practice, and we started to get an idea of how hot it really is here. I have a little portable thermometer with me, and it has registered at least 33 degrees Celsius in the shade every day. We think that our 75 litres of water might last for the rest of the week, although we might have to buy a little more. After practice, we went to pick up some of our water. On the way back from the mall, a couple enterprising youths approached us. They were going the wrong way down the street on a motorcycle and they were speaking to us in Spanish. After a brief conversation where we tried to explain that we didn´t understand what they were saying, they decided to show us a little more physically. They reached for our pockets. At this point we realised we were being mugged, so we turned and ran. They seemed inexperienced at mugging, and when we ran away they didn´t really have a solution. So we got away. Since then we have been taking along short stabilisers as clubs whenever we´ve been going to the mall, just in case we meet any other enterprising youths.
The shooting started for real on Tuesday. 90 meters went well for Hugh, who managed to place third on the field, and was awarded the bronze medal. 70 M was tough all around, and Shawn came out best in the Canadian Crew with a 305, just out of the medals. We went back to the villa for dinner, picked up some more water and slept for the night.
On Wednesday, Shawn was out for gold, and picked up a first place medal at the 50 M distance. 30M was another difficult distance, but Shawn held on for a 3rd place overall finish in the Adult Male recurve category for the total FITA.
After the Ranking round, Shawn is in 4th place (combined junior and senior) with a 1225 (A Junior is in first with a 1261.). Hugh is in 7th with a 1219, and Al is in 12th with an 1178. This is quite a good ranking for us, since it means that Al and Shawn won´t meet until the quarterfinals and Hugh won´t have to face a Canadian until the finals round if all goes well. In terms of the team round, Canada´s team should be well ranked going into the finals. We haven´t seen that ranking yet, but we have a good feeling for that.
Thursday was a day of restful practice for the Canadian Crew, as the men´s eliminations aren´t until Friday. We had a chance to sleep in a bit, and get some light practice (and a great, healthy athlete´s breakfast of Cinnabons - the village food is sometimes less than four stars). We watched our friend Natalia Alvarez from Colombia win the gold medal in the Women´s recurve category, and Judy from Barbados placed third. Erika Reyes from Mexico took the silver in that category, and I´m afraid I didn´t pay attention to the compound results so I can´t tell you anything about that. Tonight we have few plans but re-fletching and preparing for our matches tomorrow. We´ll keep you posted as we can about our progress.
