1. Sad News/Les Nouvelles Tristes (encore)
I am very sad to report that Doris Strable (Usher) passed away on June 4. She is well remembered by many archers for her support of Canadian Teams especially those of York and Interlaaken. She was a wonderful woman who spent many years in support of archery. She worked at many Vancouver Island, BC and Canadian Championships, 2 Olympics (Montréal and Los Angeles), travelled with many teams where she brought a smile to everywhere she went. While most of us knew her as 'Uncle Fred's wife', she was a long time archer and knew the words to all those songs we sang around the camp fire!
From her obituary, Victoria Times Colonist June 6, 2000: She is survived by Roy, her loving husband for the past 4 years; and her children Brian, Maureen (George) Goodwin and Ron; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Predeceased by Fred Usher, her husband for 48 years, her sisters Elaine and Madeline. Doris (Minty) was born in Victoria and was an original member of the Victoria Girls Drill Team. She was well known and respected for her involvement in many community organisations in Oak Bay and Victoria. She also belonged to Uplands Golf and Country Club for many years.
Donations if desired, may be made to the Parkinson Foundation of Canada. 316-4211 Younge St., Toronto M2S 2A9

The attachment shows that the same 4 made it to the finals regardless of the scoring method. (Please note that this was not edited for the English. The topic was sent to Al yesterday.)
Subject: Discussion about scoring principles
Please pass on to those you would think is interested - thank you.
Some times the various scoring principles comes up for discussion . Some of the archers claim the 5 or 10 ring is just too big, and if you miss it you have lost the match - which in many ways is true. The one that win doesn't make a mistake, but the losers do - and they claim there is now way they can make up the miss with today's scoring method - which is probably true, at least on short rounds like elimination and finals (matches).
The are three scoring methods that's being discussed:
As today - adding a point for the X's - or counting the X as 5, the 5 ring
as 4, the 4 ring as 3, the 3 ring as 2 and the 2 and 1 ring as 1 point.
I have done a simple test with some of the scores from the elimination at Swedish Open last week - have a look - does it make that big difference and do we really need another change???
Examining various ways of scoring for the compound class in Swedish Open 2000.
Archer points hits 5's X's Counting X as 6 Counting X as 5,½ as 1
point
Morgan 180 36 36 30 210 174
Bjørn 180 36 36 22 202 166
Peter 179 36 35 24 203 167
Guido 178 36 34 25 203 167
Mikael 178 36 34 19 197 161
Peter 177 36 33 22 199 164
Morten 176 36 32 23 199 163
Vegard 176 36 32 21 197 161
Lennart 176 36 32 16 192 156
From this simple test we see that the four going to the finals are the same no matter which we way calculate
This in spite that some archers insist it would be better to have an extra point for the X's or calculating the X as five but count the 1 and 2 ring as 1 point. There are slight differences in which number the archer become depending of the way we calculate, but nothing much.
