4. Employment Opportunity
On Sunday, April 23, 2000 9:04 PM, David Kaufman

Hello friends. I am looking for a young person to do some contract internet research for me this summer. The job will entail a minimum of 200 hours of research with the aim of creating an inventory of web sites of a particular nature. Although golf knowledge would be an asset, I am far more interested in internet literacy and research skills. The job will pay by the hour commensurate with ability. It is not necessary that this person live in Toronto, since we can communicate via the internet.

If you know someone who is interested, please have them e-mail me a message with their resume and a brief note. PLEASE ASK THEM NOT TO CALL ME!

5. New 3D Rep in Ontario
Tim Watts will be the contact for the FCA 3-D. I have moved the 3-D into the tournament
directors position which he now holds. Our Bowhunting V.P. handles bowhunting issues and since it is Provincial jurisdiction we see no need to burden him with tournament issues, any agenda items can be forward to Tim an he will speak on behalf of the OAA for FCA 3-D.
His address is: 1360 County Rd #4, Warsaw, Ont. KOL 3A0 (705) 652-8156
You can e-mail him at saugeen@pipcom.com

Coach's Notebook/Agenda d'une entraineur par Joan McDonald
Day 1/1e jour
On April 6th (Thursday) we arrived at the practise range about 9:30am. The range is owned by PSE and is behind their factory. The field is excellent, absolutely flat, but not grass - there is very little
grass in Tucson. It is made from a red sand. It has a roof over the seating area behind the shooting line, which is raised, making it very easy to watch the archers shooting. It's a good thing it's
covered - by 10 am it was 29 degrees. But is also very dry so the sun is hot, but in the shade it was quite pleasant. We enjoyed meeting archers from Canada, the US and other countries that we haven't seen since last year. In total there are 26 archers from Canada at this event - pretty impressive.

Shawn and his Dad, Gord Riggs drove from Kitchener to Arizona. Gord was looking a little sheepish this morning and Shawn couldn't wait to tell us about waking up in the middle of the night to find his Dad taking the smoke detector apart in their hotel room. Apparently, he thought was beeping, so he pulled the battery to make it stop. However, the beeping continued - because it was his cell phone which had a message on it and was beeping every so often to notify him about the message.

Day 2/2e jour
Friday, April 7th - Official practise day.
Everyone was on the field by 9:30am to take advantage of the normally calm mornings. About noon every day the wind comes up blowing across the field from the right to left. Hugh's thermometer was at 30 degrees by 10am, so it was going to be a hot one. Jane Johnson, as director of shooting was already warning people regularly to drink lots of water and wear their sun screen. Thank goodness for the covered area behind the shooting line.

Later in the day Justin Huish, the 1996 Olympic Gold medalist also appeared to practise. This is a say story. Justin was named to the 2000 US Olympic team last fall, but was recently arrested and charged with drug trafficking. He has since resigned from the US Olympic team.

At 3:30 pm I and several other coaches who are here with their athletes (Kathy Millar, Denis Beaudet, Liviu Lucescu, Gary Gillies, Bob Brodie, Aime Breault) attend the Team Captains meeting to get last minute instructions for the competition. Pascal Colamire is here as the Technical Delegate from FITA to make sure this World Ranking Event is run correctly.

There are 84 Olympic men, 56 Olympic women, 67 compound men and 33 compound woemn competing in this tournament. There are archers from 21 countries, including even Uzbekistan and Mongolia. No question that this is the most important tournament in the Americas this year.
At 4 pm there is one of the shortest opening ceremonies I have ever attended which pleases all the archers greatly and we are off the field.

Day 3/3e jour
Up at 5:30am............and on the field at 7 am to be ready for the Olympic Men and Compound women whose practice starts at 7:30 am. But even before we got to the field we knew it was going to be a windy day. At the field the wind was blowing from right to left and was very strong. Dust was in the air and the mountains were all but obscured by the dust. The long distances were not going to be easy. At the end of the 90 meter distance, the top score for Olympic men was 304 shot by Magnus Petersson from Sweden (silver medalist in the 1996 Olympics). Hugh MacDonald was 14th with a 277, Shawn Riggs was 27th with 267, Jeannot Robitaille was 32 with a 265, David Dalziel was
33rd with 264 and Al Jenskey was 53 with 237. The compound ladies did a bit better with a top score of 320. The top Canadian was Lillian Meehan with a 307.
The wind actually got a bit worse at 70 meters and we saw a few "dust devils" (small quick little tornados) that rush across the field scattering everything in their way. By noon the mountains were only pale outlines in the sky and it was cloudy but not at all hot. In the afternoon it was the turn of the Ladies Olympic and the compound men.

Day 4/4e jour
It was still windy, but not nearly as bad as yesterday and by noon the mountains were clearly
visible again. However, today it was blowing across the field from left to right - exactly the opposite of yesterday. But it was really hot - definitely the hotest day yet. It was easy to see that technicque was a little ragged today. As well, it was clear that those archers on the 1st 3 butts had an advantage
as their targets were in the lee of a big building and the building cast a shadow on the shooting positions, so they got to shoot in the shade. Tomorrow the match play will start - this is the real beginning of the competition.

Day 5/5e jour
First of all, here's something that I forgot to tell you yesterday. Janet Bars, the wife of Jay Bars, the 1988 Olympic Gold Medalist had a miss on the first day of the FITA at 70 meters. When she went
behind the target to find her arrow, she was horrified to discover that she had shot a Kangaroo rat - a small rodent with big back legs that hops like a kangaroo. It was the talk of the day!!

Today was match play all day. The men and women compound shooters competed in the morning.
During the finals for the compound divisions the wind - again was the same as yesterday, blowing from left to right across the field and just as strong - phoey!!!

The ladies compound event was won by Ashley Kamuf - who is still a junior. She beat Sally Wonderle by 3 points for the Gold medal. The men's gold medal match between Dave Cousins (1999 world champion) and Sitar (1997 world champion) was very exciting. They were tied with
scores of 111 at the end of the match. Ties in match play are broken in the following way - each archer shoots one arrow - the archer that scores the highest value wins. However, if they are still tied, they shoot another arrow - again for score. If they are still tied, they shoot a third arrow and the shot closest to the middle wins the match. They both shot 10's on their first arrow. On the second
shot, Dave Cousins shot first and scored another 10. Sitar came to full draw and a big gust of wind visible blew his bowarm way off the target. Everyone gasped, because with only 40 seconds to shoot the arrow he did not have time to put it down and start again. He brought his bow back on the target and shot a 10. Even though he was not the favourite in the match, he got a huge round of applause. On the last arrow, Dave shot first and shot an 8. Sitar took the opportunity handed to him and shot a 9 to win the competition.

In the afternoon it was the turn of the recurve shooters. We stayed and watched the rest of the competition. It is interesting to note that not a single lady shot a score equal to the Canadian
Olympic Association qualifying score for ladies. On the men's side there were only 4 scores above the COA standard.

Tomorrow are the team rounds. These are always fun events that the archers particularly enjoy. And now that the important part of the tournament is over, it will probably be calm!!
