Check out the FCA Catalogue for pins, crests, manuals and clothing::
This week I finished a daunting task that I took on before I came back to work for the FCA. I have finally completed the new level 3 coach manual. Now it can be pilotted and published. It was an interesting journey, but one that I am glad to end!
Lots of things are happening in archery, particularly as we approach the Olympic Trials date of June 30, 2000. Congratulations to all FCA coaches, athletes, judges and volunteer administrators. A lot of people put time, money and emotion into all our programmes. It is very much appreciated.

5. Archers in Actions/Les athletes sur la piste olympique
From: "Joan McDonald" > Subject: Olympic Qualifying - continued
The last time I wrote to you, Canadian archers had just finished shooting the Arizona Cup. You will recall that it was a very windy tournament and no one - not even the best in the world who attended that tournament were able to shoot scores to equal or better the scores that must be shot by Canadians to meet the qualifying standard set by the Canadian Olympic Association.
Since then David Dalziel attended the Cottonball Classic in California on May 4th and 5th. He did very well at that tournament - in fact he won it as well as shooting a qualifying score twice. However, we are only allowed to use one qualifier per tournament. Dave shot a 112 and a 110 in 12 arrow matches.
So now here are the number of qualifiers Canadian archers have.
Rob Rusnov - 4 scores and is completely qualified
David Dalziel - 3 scores
Shawn Riggs - 2 scores
Hugh MacDonald - 1 score
Claude Rousseau - 1 score
Kevin Sally - 1 score
Angela Cramer - 1 score
Racheal Savage - 1 score

Report from Gold Cup
Yesterday (Friday) Rob Rusnov, Dave Dalziel, Shawn Riggs, Racheal Savage, Al Jenskey, Brian McIlroy and Gary Gillies and drove 9 hours to Bloomfield, New Jersey for the . We drove the entire way in the pouring rain and hoped that tomorrow would be better. Claude Rousseau, Jeannot Robitaille, Marie-Pierre Beaudet, Pierre Giguere, Sylvio Bouffard, Yan Bourgois, Jean-Pierre Bureau and Malene Johansen, also are here.
(Saturday) Up this morning at 6 am, breakfast at IHOP (International House of Pancakes) and found the field at 8 am. Got target assignments - the whistle went for the first practise end......and........the sky's opened and it began to pour. The thermometer in Gary's van said the temperature was 8 degree Celcius. Everyone put on their wet weather gear and practise continued.
Towards the end of the 45 minutes of practise, the organizers announced that they were considering changing the round to be shot from a FITA to an Olympic round (72 arrows at 70 meters). That would be much shorter than a FITA and get everyone out of the cold and rain a little sooner. However, a few archers, in particular Yan Bourgois from Quebec, needed the FITA as a major event to qualify for the Junior World Championships. It was eventually decided that those who wanted to shoot the FITA could and everyone else would shoot the double 70 meters.
So the field was re-arranged, the 5 people who were going to shoot the FITA moved to one end of the field, everyone was given one more practise end and scoring started. It was still raining - in fact raining was too gentle a term - it was pouring !! The only slightly good thing was that there was no wind. There was a leader board and runners, but with the rain and the growing mud, it was going to be difficult to keep up to date. In the meantime, the rain continued. Sometimes it would slow down a bit but then it returned to pouring as usual. Everyone got slowly wetter and colder. But some archers were shooting pretty well considering the conditions. I don't have all the scores for the first 36 arrows at 70 meters.
There was no break for lunch as everyone bought hotdogs and bagels from the stand as shooting progressed. The stand soon ran out of hot chocolate and had to send out for more. Many archers were seriously cold by 2:30pm when shooting finished and everyone was covered in mud as the field had deteriorated badly.
Tomorrow everyone will be shoot the in the elimination round. For the Olympic archers, those are the scores that really count. If you know any good weather gods, would you say a word for us?
Subject: Olympic Qualifying - Day 2, Gold Cup (Sunday) We peeked outside this monring at 6am, hoping for no rain. The ground was wet, but it wasn't actually raining. The temperature was a tiny bit warmer - instead of 8 degree C it was 10 degrees C. So as long as it didn't rain it would be a good day for shooting. More pancakes for breakfast....did you know that Rob can eat 3 eggs, bacon and 5 pancakes for breakfast ??!!!
The Gold Cup competition has two sets of eliminations. They cut to 32 men both compound and Olympic and 16 women compound and Olympic. They run this through to the final matches in the morning, then have a break and shoot a team round and then using the final ranking from the morning, they repeat the whole process in the afternoon. To determine the winners, they add the archers placings and the person with the lowest number of points wins. For
instance, if you won the preliminary round you are 1st and so have one point. If you win the first elimination you also have one point. If you are 2nd in the afternoon elimination, you have 2 points for a total of 4, which would probably be the lowest score so you would win.
The mud on the field was somewhat better because it wasn't so wet, but it was going to be another dirty day. Dave Cousins shot one match of 178 - that's 16 tens and two nine's, equaling his own world record for an 18 arrow match. One of the 9's was only out by about a 1/32 of an inch. He also had a 12 arrow match of 120 with 7 x's which is a new world record. As well, he had a 36 arrow total of 358 - perfect is 360. That means he shot 34 tens and two nines. Remember this is 70 meters !! The guy is just phenomenal.
In the round of 16 Rob and Dave came up against each other. In the second and third end, Rob pulled away and won. Claude Rousseau was also shooting well in his match, but in the end it was a heart breaker. The score required for Olympic qualifying is 164 and Claude finished the match with a 163 as well as loosing the match. So no new Olympic qualifing scores were shot this weekend. Too bad. But it was a treat to see Canadians near the top of the heap. We know that Rob finished in 4th place overall and I am sure that Sylvio did as well or better.
The next opportunity for Olympic qualifying scores is next weekend - May 27-28 in three places. The Buckeye Memorial in Columbus, Ohio, the Canada Cup in Victoria and the Gold Cup in Sacramento, California. Rob, Dave, Al and Claude will travel to Columbus to try again while Shawn is flying Monday morning to Vancouver to meet Hugh MacDonald and they are driving to Sacramento for the California Cup. I'll let you know how they make out.

6. VIII World Sport for All Congress - Report
Location: Quebec city
Dates: May 19-21, 2000
Turn-out: 600 - 700 participants from 104 countries
Main partners: CIO; UNESCO; OMS; AGFIS and various Canadian and Quebec
organisms.
Main Subject: Sport for all and Governmental Politicies
Sub-topics:
(SFA means Sport for All) - SFA and Political / Economic Actions; SFA and World Policies; SFA in Governmental Policies as an essential means towards
the improvement of social health and well-being; Governmental policies concerning SFA and older people; Governmental Policies and SFA serving an
ever evolving society.
Progress:
Every morning and afternoon started with 3 lectures, followed by 18 sessions (on average), conducted in 3 parallel groups (of 6 sessions each). Hence I had the chance to attend to about 50 sessions. Written detailed report: I have a 217 pages booklet in French summarising each session. I also have some various documents. I will give them to the FCA office as soon as I have a chance.
Main message: Public authorities are invited to urgently introduce, support and develop SFA through political actions and programs to increase physical activities and activities in order to improve life quality. They should not consider SFA as a cost but an investment.
Evaluation: Mister SAMARANCH said in his closing speech that it was the best ever SFA Congress. Several good ideas / reflections / suggestions
were made.
For archery: Positive perspective in this contradictory word, in which there is a significant increase on one hand of the awareness of the benefit from physical activity, and on the other hand of the rate of sedentarity and obesity. For a sedentary and/or obese person, who wants to practice a sport, some "smooth" sports like archery are more accessible that "energetic" sport. The ageing population in most of the countries is also a bonus for some sports like archery, also because more physically accessible. If the awareness of the benefit from being physically active is well promoted by several Sport and Medical organisms as well as some Governments, sports have to deliver better services to the population. These services have to be delivered in the local communities, hence by the archery clubs and mainly through the local archery coaches.
IX World SFA Congress: October 27-29, 2002 at the National Sports Centre
Papendal in Arnhem (the Netherlands)
Respectively submitted.
