Subject: Athlete programs get $12,000 gift from COALa version française suit.

December 23, 1999 - The Canadian Olympic Association (COA) announced today that a net income of $12,000 at the 1999 Annual Congress in April will be allocated to local and national athlete programs and services.

"We are proud to reinvest these funds towards amateur sport and athlete support in Canada," said Carol Anne Letheren, CEO of the association. "It's by investing in the development of athletes that we secure a future of excellence in high performance sport, and maintain our promise to promote amateur athletes in any way we can."

The net income comes from excess congress revenues accumulated through COA contributions, local sponsorship, event registration and ticket sales, against related expenses. The Congress, held in Fredericton, featured a series of workshops and special events, including the COA Hall of Fame induction ceremonies and ran in conjunction with the COA annual general meeting. Guests from the sporting community as well as all COA members and the general public were invited to attend the three-day event, which was a tremendous success. Also, members of the Athlete's Council enjoyed a Community Day, which consisted of visiting students at local schools and participation in various activities.

Forty per cent of the net income has been transferred by the COA to the Athletes' Fund, which provides direct financial support to top Canadian athletes. The other 60 per cent of the financial legacy will go towards the creation of an Olympians Canada Chapter in New Brunswick. This contribution to a local cause is a first for the Congress.

"These chapters are an excellent way for Olympians and friends of the Olympic Movement to show their support for the up and coming athletes of New Brunswick and to assist in generating awareness of the Olympic Movement in Canada," said Shane Pearsall, Chair of the COA Athletes' Council. "We thank the Fredericton Congress Committee for their hard work in making this legacy a reality"

The next COA Annual Congres will take place in Ottawa from April 28 to 30 2000.

The COA, a private, not-for-profit corporation, is the largest private sector funder of amateur sport in Canada. It is responsible for all aspects of Canada's involvement in the Olympic Movement, including Canada's participation in the Olympic and Pan American Games. In addition, the COA manages a wide variety of programs that promote the Olympic Movement in Canada through cultural and educational means.

COA hopes public debate on feds' pro hockey proposal (disponible uniquementen anglais maintenant)

COA hopes public debate on feds' pro hockey proposal raised recognition of amateur sports' need for support

La version française suit.

Toronto - (January 21, 2000 ) - Although the federal government today announced that it has withdrawn its proposed professional hockey support program, Canadian Olympic Association Chief Executive Officer Carol Anne Letheren hopes that the attention given to the issue has rubbed off on amateur sport in Canada.

"The public debate that the government's hockey subsidy proposal initiated is getting people thinking and talking about amateur sports, too," said Ms. Letheren. "We hope this debate will provide the impetus for more of the Mills' Reports' amateur sport financial recommendations to be adopted.

"Amateur sport is the feeder system for all professional sports - not just hockey," she stated. "It is urban and rural, for males and females and generally is open to all economic levels. We cannot under-estimate the value of amateur sport to our country. Declining public support for amateur sport sends the message that amateur sport does not matter, while it is abundantly clear that it does indeed matter. Not only is it a very real part of national culture, it is a major driver of our economy.

"In 1994-95, for example," she noted, "the Canadian sporting good industry provided 8,734 jobs and paid over $223 million in wages and salaries. In 1992, amateur sport in Canada represented a $16.2 billion activity; Canadians spent $11.7 billion on fitness-related and basic sport purchases, and paid $3 billion for the delivery of organized, competitive amateur sport."

Amateur sports' benefits to Canada extend far beyond the economic picture, Ms. Letheren stressed. "It's been proven that sport plays a critical role in socializing children," she said. "Female high school athletes, for example, are 92% less likely to get involved with drugs, 89% less likely to get pregnant and three times more likely to graduate from high school than their peers who do not participate in sports."

Ms. Letheren added that the COA sincerely hopes that the attention that filters from the professional to the amateur sport scene will be helpful to Secretary of State for Amateur Sport Denis Coderre, who now has a proposal in front of the government regarding amateur athletes.
