This study investigated in the role of information processing used by novice  subjects submitted to different conditions aimed at guiding them to acquire  the motor skills required to perform archery. The "reference" group was given  information using fleeting supports (gestural demonstrations and oral  comments), while the "experimental" group of subjects received information  using permanent support (pictures and written comments). These protocols were  applied to two sets of 20 children, respectively in primary or secondary  school, and therefore at different mental development stages (concrete  operation and preformal/formal stages). Differences were noted in motor skill  acquisition according to the quality of the cognitive constructions made by

the subjects: better performances were obtained at the end of the training  phase by the group of "experimental" subjects. Because of the learning  conditions they received, they appeared to construct better mental  representations of archery motions. This effect was most significant in older  subjects, at a more advanced stage of cognitive development, and clearly more efficient in mental operation. These results are interpreted with regard to  cognitive theories of motor skill acquisition.

Title: Performance emotions in an elite archer: a case study.
Description:  In "Journal of sport behavior (Mobile, Ala.)". v. 23(2) June 2000  pgs 144-163
No of References: 42 Author(s): Robazza, C. and Bortoli, L. Language:  Eng
Subjects:  1._archery  2._elite athlete  3._emotion  4._competition  5._case  study  6._theoretical model  7._evaluation
Level: A Call Number: GV 706.4.P4 #80

The main goal of the investigation was to test predictions derived from the  Individual Zones of Optimal Functioning (IZOF) model comprising facilitating  and inhibiting emotions. The IZOF model suggests that an athlete is most  likely to achieve best performance when prestart emotion intensities are close  to the emotion intensities related to recalled optimal performances.

Conversely, poor performance is expected when pre-start emotion intensities  are near to the emotion intensities linked to recalled ineffective  performances. To test this hypothesis, a single-subject study was carried out  on an elite female archer during practice and competition at the 1995 world  archery championships. A multidimensional approach was chosen incorporating emotions, heart rate pattern, and performance measures. Intraindividual  analyses revealed that most emotion scores were near to recalled poor

performance scores, particularly before competitive events. The dysfunctional  pre-start emotion pattern was followed by non-optimal heart rate pattern,  dysfunctional behavior, and poor shooting scores. These findings gave support  to the IZOF-based predictions of emotion-performance relationships.  SIRC has this Serial Analytic

Title: The elasticity a analysis of a bow.  Description:  In "Korean journal of sport science (Seoul)". v. 11
No of References: 6 Author(s): Ahn, B.H. Language:  Eng Subjects:  1._archery  2._bow  3._physics  4._elasticity
Level: A Call Number: GV 701 P4 #1360
The purpose of this study was to analyze the elastic forces of a bow and a limb  at various degrees of pull and the vibration of a bow after shooting to  investigate the mechanical characteristics of a bow and a limb. A device that  can measure the elastic forces of a bow and the separate limb was developed  for this study. Elastic forces of a bow and a limb were measured at 12  locations from the initial resting position to a position that a bow or a limb is fully pulled. The shape of a limb varying with the strength of pull was recorded by a video camera. The locations of markers attached on a limb were  digitized using a video digitizing system. A high speed video camera (Nac High Speed Video 1000fps, Japan) was employed to measure the vibration of a bow.  Subjects and bows tested in this study were 4 members of Korea Woman's  National Archery team and the 4 bows that the players were using. The increasing rate of elastic force was relatively high in the initial range of  pull, small in the mid-range of pull and large in the final range of pull. The patterns of the elastic forces with respect to the strength of pull between the upper and the lower limb of the bows tested in this study were different.   The initial resting shapes of limbs of the four bows were very similar. But,  their shapes between middle and end part of limbs were slightly different as  the limbs were more deeply pulled. The time that took from the instant that an arrow was about to be released to the instant of the maximum amplitude was  0.01 seconds. After the maximum amplitude was reached, the string was vibrated  back and forth at the time interval of 0.002 seconds for a while. SIRC has this Serial Analytic  Order now via SIRCExpress

4.    ATHLETES LEND THEIR SUPPORT TO GAME PLAN 2000 - SPORT MATTERS!

Ottawa, November 21 - We believe it is important to talk about sport during this federal election campaign. With one week left to election day, Greg Joy, Chantal Benoit, Alwyn Morris and other athletes are speaking on behalf of many organizations and individuals to ensure that sport is on the agenda. By talking about sport, you also talk about health, development, industry, culture and national pride – because sport contributes in a positive way to everyone of these priority areas.

Olympic silver medallist Greg Joy has lent his voice to the Sport Matters campaign, "Most recently at the Olympic games in Sydney we saw the results of years of a marginalized sports system that is dramatically under-funded and lacking in clear direction. From the scarcity of daily quality physical activity in our schools to a lack of facilities, we must do better - both in participation and recreational activities to high performance sport in Canada," said. "The national pride we experience through the success of our amateur athletes is an intangible that bonds us as a nation. Sport matters and I believe that we as a nation should support it."

Chantal Benoit, three time gold medallist at the Paralympic Games, focused on the direct link between health and sport, "The fact is, with every 10 % increase in the number of active Canadians there is a 5 billion reduction in health care costs, " stated Benoit. "Sport is important. Canada must have a national policy for sport."

Olympic Gold and bronze medallist Alwyn Morris, expressed how sport affects national pride, "Winning a gold and bronze medals in 1984 in Los Angeles was a great moment for me, for my family, for aboriginal people and all Canadians alike." Morris then went on to underline the importance of sport as an election issue, "It seems that unless sport and physical activity finds itself as a priority during the election campaign – it will not find itself as a government priority afterwards. Sport and physical activity does matter. In fact all governments and sport leaders must develop a comprehensive national sport policy that creates new opportunities in sport and physical activity for everyone. "

To hear complete voice clips, from Jeff Adams, Chantal Benoit, Susanne Dandenault, Richard Duncan, Greg Joy, Ljiljana Ljubisic, Alwyn Morris, go to http://tntontario.com/cg/sportmatters.htm . Whether retired or still competing all of them have given time to ensure that sport matters during this campaign, so that it will be a priority after election day.

Sport has the power to change lives, transform communities, and help shape the future of Canada. Sport embraces all ages, all economic brackets and both genders. It is a road to equity for disadvantaged groups in our society. It has become a powerful factor in our Gross Domestic Product and it is a wonderful instrument to promote international trade. Amateur sport is an inherent part of Canadian culture and plays as an invaluable role in the development of our future citizens and the well being of all Canadians.
