  Greetings/Bonjour:
This week I have to start with the sad news that long-time volunteer Alain Gravel has decided to step down from his position as FCA vice-president. Fortunately, he will continue to be FCA's official translator and hopefully when he retires from teaching in two years, he will be able to come back. I'll miss your smiling face at FCA meetings though, Alain!

Canadian Olympic Association
MEDIA RELEASE
Canadian Olympic Association announces agreement to settle Olympic Lottery lawsuit

Toronto (November 15, 2000) - Canadian Olympic Association (COA) officials today announced that the association has reached an agreement with the insurers of the Canadian Olympic Lottery for Athletes.

"We are most gratified to announce that, based on the terms of this settlement, the COA will recover its net loss on the operation of the lottery," stated Bill Warren, COA President. "In addition," he stated, "we will receive a contribution to our legal expenses."

Mr. Warren noted that the COA will receive a total settlement of approximately $CDN10 million and that a full report will be provided at the
Board of Directors meeting in December in Montreal.

"The Board of Directors decided at the April 2000 meeting to move all fundraising activities into the COA from the Canadian Olympic Foundation," said COA CEO Carol Anne Letheren. "We're very excited about the potential this new consolidated revenue-generation approach affords us. The integration of our marketing and fundraising efforts allows each to complement the other."

The COA, a private, not-for-profit corporation, is the largest private sector funder of amateur sport in Canada. It is responsible for all aspects of Canada's involvement in the Olympic Movement, including Canada's participation in the Olympic and Pan American Games. In addition, the COA manages a wide variety of programs that promote the Olympic Movement in Canada through cultural and educational means. For more information see the COA website:

5. In Their Own Voices
NOVEMBER 2000 Vol. 1, No. 2
"In Their Own Voices" is a two-part examination of women coaches who are raising a family.

Sheila Robertson's moving interviews with a cross-section of Canada's women coaches reveal common threads: the passion for their families and their sport, in that order; the absolute necessity of a supportive spouse; schedules that can only be described as frantic; and inequitable coaching salaries.

In "Supporting Women Who Coach And Have Families", Rose Mercier examines the problem of balancing work and motherhood, compares other professions, and offers practical suggestions to affecting positive change for women coaches.

Dans leurs propres mots

NOVEMBRE 2000 Vol. 1, N° 2

6. GAME PLAN 2000 Focuses On the Importance Of Amateur Sport Across the Country
Sport Nova Scotia Supports National Plan Sport Nova Scotia has joined forces with 23 amateur sport organizations from across the country to participate in GAME PLAN 2000 - a joint effort designed to ensure that the issues facing amateur sport are raised - and remembered - during the Federal election campaign. GAME PLAN 2000 will incorporate a variety of activities designed to raise public awareness of the challenges facing amateur sport, encourage all Federal political parties to create and communicate a clear platform on the topic, and to allow individuals to bring forward issues that are important to their communities.

As part of Sport Nova Scotia's commitment to the GAME PLAN 2000 strategy, the non-profit organization will be hosting a political panel at the Time Out Sport Lounge, Halifax Metro Centre (George St. entrance) on Tuesday, November 21st. Representatives of five parties will present their policy on amateur sport and field public questions on the future of the sport community.

"Sport organizations across the country are all facing similar challenges," notes Scott Logan, CEO of Sport Nova Scotia. "We believe that while it is of utmost importance to continue our work across the province to ensure that the needs of all Nova Scotians are addressed it is equally important that we work, when possible, with organizations in other provinces. Federal policy affects us all, and the parties know that the 23 GAME PLAN participants represent a large segment of voters, so this seemed an ideal time to join forces for the future of amateur sport."

Some of the facts and figures behind GAME PLAN 2000's position that amateur sport is important to Canada are:

- For every 10% increase in the number of physically active Canadians there is a $5 billion reduction in health care.
- Amateur sport and related industries contribute more to Canada's Gross Domestic Product than either the fishing, wood, or aircraft industries
- Active people are less likely to smoke, use illicit drugs, leave school, or engage in criminal activity.

Nova Scotians Invited to Question Federal Candidates On the Future of Amateur Sport in Canada

Political Panel and Public Question and Answer Session Tuesday, November 21st, 12:30 - 1:30 pm - Metro Centre, Halifax

On Tuesday, November 21st Nova Scotians will have the opportunity to learn, first-hand, what might be in store for amateur sport in Canada. Representatives of the Federal Liberal, Progressive Conservative, Canadian Alliance, and NDP parties will get together on November 21st, at the Metro Centre "Time Out Sport Lounge" in Halifax, to discuss the issue from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. The event is open to everyone.

This public forum has been prompted by the fact that several sport related issues have recently been receiving a lot of public attention. Many Canadian Olympians have spoken out about the importance of supporting amateur athletes at all stages of their training and development and the recent HRM municipal election campaign brought to the forefront the issue of public access to our sport and recreation facilities.

Based on the interest in these and other sport related issues, Sport Nova Scotia felt the public should have the opportunity to learn, first-hand, if their sport related priorities are receiving adequate attention from the various Federal parties.

"More and more people are becoming aware of the fact that many of the issues facing amateur sport in this province are actually issues that have an impact on all of us," notes Scott Logan, CEO of Sport Nova Scotia. "We are not dealing with something that only affects a small group of athletes - future policy on this issue will affect every Nova Scotian, their children, and their grandchildren."

Representatives from the five parties will participate in a moderated panel to address some of the key issues in amateur sport - accessibility to sport and sport facilities for all Canadians, creation of a strong amateur sport infrastructure, tax relief for sport volunteers, tax incentives for corporate sponsors of sport, and the importance of hiring trained professionals to ensure both job creation and a positive sport experience for all.

Participants in the political panel will be:
- Jordi Morgan - Alliance Party candidate, Dartmouth
- Charles Cirtwell - Progressive Conservative candidate, Halifax West
- Bernie Boudreau - Liberal candidate, Dartmouth
- Peter Stoffer - NDP incumbent, Sackville/Musquodobait Valley/Eastern Shore
- Michael Oddy - Green Party candidate, Halifax

The panel will be moderated by Scott Logan, CEO of Sport Nova Scotia, and after the completion of the panel there will be a public question and answer session. All members of the public are welcome to attend and learn more about each party's views on the issues facing amateur sport or to voice their own concerns during the question and answer session. Seating is available on a drop-in basis. For further information about attending the Amateur Sport Political Panel Event please call 902.497.1598.
