CFC Bulletin No. 41
Excluded Handguns from the Prohibited List
On December 1, 1998, handguns with a barrel length of 105 mm or less, or that are designed or altered to discharge 25 or 32 calibre cartridges, became prohibited. Currently, there is an amnesty to allow non-grandfathered owners to dispose of their handguns.
Some handguns that fall into this category, however, were excluded from the definition of a prohibited firearm. Prohibited handguns commonly used in international competitions governed by the rules of the International Shooting Union (ISU), were excluded from the prohibited firearms definition and instead now fall into the restricted firearm definition. This was to ensure that the new prohibited class of handguns would not affect the participation of Canadian as well as visiting athletes in formal international shooting competitions.
Changes and Updates to the List of Excluded Handguns
In response to requests made by firearms owners, the Department of Justice has recently updated the list of excluded handguns as well as modified some of the existing listings.
This list has been expanded from 22 to 37 entries and includes modifications to five of the original listings. Please find attached the updated list of handguns excluded from the prohibited definition.
Please note: after December 31, 2000 you will need a licence (or a valid FAC) to possess firearms and to buy ammunition. Apply now! For more information, or for a copy of the Firearms Act, its regulations and other CFC publications, contact us at:

The Firearms Act is being phased-in from December 1, 1998 to January 1, 2003.

From: Joan McDonald Subject: COA qualifiers
Some good news.
Shawn Riggs now has 2 COA qualifiers. He shot at the 2000 Arizona State Championships, Tucson 112 in a 12 arrow match
Claude Rousseau/1 COA qualifier at the 2000 Arizona State Championships,
Tucson 164 in an 18 arrow match
(Claude also shot a 111, but we can only count 1 score per tournament for COA.)
**********************************************************************
Letters home (from Shawn Riggs)
Well here we go. I'm writing just a short blurp about our tournaments whenever I can get to a computer. Almost everybody arrived Thursday as planned. However, Dave always seems to be the exception from the rule. He arrived Friday night, but we didn't see him until we got to the range Saturday morning.
We shot the long half of the Fita on Saturday. Match play was supposed to follow but we could see a big storm cloud a-brewin' and headed our way. So
they decided to postpone the OR round until Sunday. The wind was fairly tricky Saturday morning. It seemed to be a bit of head wind. It pushed
arrows high and low for everybody. All said I think I was the only person disappointed with the long distances. Dave shot quite well and both Al and
Hugh had a respectable day. I worked quite hard all day but I never did getthings to work.
We never got the storm Saturday evening but it did rain Saturday night. Sunday was a much calmer day. It was a little cool, but not quite as windy.
Again, I think everybody had a respectable morning. Again I struggled but I decided to work on my equipment. I was using a program for PalmPilots to
plot my arrows at 30m. I used the results to do a little bit of tuning. It seemed to really pay off.
In match play Hugh drew a Canadian first round as always. He lost a match to Claude Rousseau, who was on fire. Claude shot a 164 and got his first
Olympic Qualifier. Al and Dave also squared off in the first round. Al staged a stunning upset beating Dave 148 to 140. I drew Vic Wunderle. He
shot a good match but missed with three arrows to go. So I won. I went on to shoot against Keith Hanlon from Ireland. I was hot and shot a 112 to his
108. That also earned me my second qualifier. Al lost his next match in a one arrow tie break to a young guy from Britain. I lost my next match to
Claude Rousseau who went on to place second. When it was all said and done Canadians were second and third in a field that included many international
archers. We also got two Olympic qualifiers. Certainly a good start to the season.
I'm sorry I have to cut it short but the librarian is kicking me off (the computer).

NEWS FROM THE SYDNEY 2000 PARALYMPIC GAMES Issue Number 39 - March 2000
ABC-TV will be the domestic free-to-air television broadcaster of the Paralympic Games in October 2000 for Australian audiences. The Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee (SPOC) and the Seven Network, which was the initial domestic broadcaster, agreed late last year that the ABC should be approached to broadcast the Games to Australian audiences. The ABC proposes to broadcast a minimum of 60 minutes of daily highlights at 5.30pm with repeats, updates and new segments in a further 45 minute broadcast at 11.15pm each night from 18-29 October. The ABC's production schedule enables it to broadcast 45 minutes more coverage per day than originally planned with Seven. The Seven Network will complement the ABC's coverage with a highlights package to be broadcast daily on its pay-TV channel, C7. Geoff Barlow, Commissioning Editor ABC-TV Sports, said the station's association with the Paralympics began in Seoul in 1988 and included coverage of the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Paralympic Games for Australian viewers. "We are pleased to continue that association in 2000." The Paralympic Games' host broadcaster, Global-AMS, is offering live coverage of both Ceremonies to all rightsholders, including ABC-TV, as well as live footage of five sports, including all finals, and taped coverage of all other sports finals.
