 1.    Mexico Coaching Seminar  (Nov 15 to 26 2000) Report from Bruce Savage

The Seminar was held at the Mexico Olympic Training Centre in Mexico City, and was hosted by COPANARCO.  The event was attended by over 50 coaches from Central and South America. Translators were provided as needed and the travel, food and accommodation needs were taken care of by the organizing committee.  Overall the event was well organized and certainly worth attending.

The speakers were Wieslaw Opalek, a coach from Poland, Matt Cleland from the USA and Pascal Colmaire now with FITA.  The topics covered ranged from shooting form, strength training, mental training to yearly planning.  A lot of time was spent at the practice range and in the gyms where the coaches could try the various techniques that were being presented. The informal sharing of ideas and information among the coaches was also a major benefit to attending the seminar.  With the use of the usual archery hand and body movements, even a non-Spanish speaking participant (ME!) was able to communicate and establish some new friendships.

The volume of material covered at the seminar is too large to summarize for the weekly email, but if you have specific topics you are interested in, please contact me at savage@netrover.com  - there may be some articles that were handed out that pertain to your area of interest - I will be glad to send copies out to you.

I believe that Canadian participation in events run COPANARCO will strengthen the sport of Archery in the Americas.  Canadian coaches and archers have a lot to offer, and a lot to learn from our peers throughout the Americas.
