2. Marketing
COA/NSO marketing programme brings Labatt's on-line. For the past year, FCA's Ottawa office has been working with 29 other "smaller" NSO's to line up sponsorship through COA. COA just had a news conference in Toronto this week to announce that Labatt Breweries has taken us on. There is still a lot of work to do attracting other sponsors by the end of June, but this will help all Olympic sports in a substantial way, if everyone signs on. Rob Rusnov and Kevin Sally were asked to attend the press conference to represent Archery.
Depuis un annee, FCA travaille avec d'autre petits sports olympiques de gagner les commoditaires avec l'AOC. Kevin et Rob nous ont represente a une conference de presse. Bissonnette spent 5 years working in Europe as a dental hygienist and is now working, residing, and it looks like shooting,in the Ottawa/Hull area.

partager cette information avec vous.

Lorsqu'elle lancera sa nouvelle saison à l'automne de 1999, la SRC annoncera la création de CBC Sports SATURDAY... qui permettra de couvrir
davantage les sports amateurs au Canada. En sa qualité de télédiffuseur public, la SRC croit qu'elle doit raviver son intérêt envers les athlètes
amateurs. Elle a d'ailleurs pris un engagement considérable relativement aux Jeux olympiques des dix prochaines années. Ce plan l'aidera à appuyer
les athlètes canadiens avant et pendant les Jeux.
Grâce à une réaffectation des ressources au sein du secteur Sports (en puisant dans le budget des sports professionnels) et à des partenariats
commerciaux d'envergure avec des commanditaires, CBC Sports augmentera sa couverture des sports amateurs de 40 % au cours du présent exercice et de
50 % en 2000-2001.

L'augmentation de la variété des sports qui seront télédiffusés sera tout aussi importante que celle du nombre d'heures de programmation. En
1998-1999, nous couvrirons 15 sports olympiques, et en 1999-2000, 17. En 2000-2001, ce chiffre passera à 22. Parmi ces sports, nous retrouvons la
lutte, le tennis de table, la natation, l'athlétisme, le cyclisme, la boxe et la discipline de trampoline et tumbling. En plus de la retransmission
des manifestations, nous entendons concevoir des émissions et des séries mettant en lumière le journalisme sportif. À compter de janvier 2000, nous
télédiffuserons une série de 17 émissions sur les héros olympiques canadiens du siècle dernier. Nous nous sommes également engagés à long
terme à télédiffuser à une heure de grande écoute la remise des prix du sport canadien, une soirée rendant hommage aux meilleurs athlètes amateurs
du Canada. L'élément final du plan est la façon dont nous allons grouper ces émissions. Nous trouvons important de présenter les sports amateurs
dans un créneau régulier. À compter d'octobre, CBC Sports Saturday commencera à 12 h (HNE). Les épreuves de plongeon, de gymnastique, de sauts

CBC Backgrounder:
As part of the 1999 Fall Launch CBC will announce the creation of CBC Sports SATURDAY...a vehicle for the enhanced coverage of Canadian amateur
sports. In its role as the public broadcaster, CBC believes it must redevelop its commitment to amateur athletes. The CBC has also made a
significant commitment to the Olympics over the next ten years. This plan allows us to support Canadian athletes leading up to the Games and at the
Games.
Through re-direction of resources within the Sports department (from the professional sports) and through significant commercial partnerships with
sponsors, CBC Sports will increase its coverage of amateur sport by 40% in this fiscal year and by 50% in 2000-2001.

Equally important to increasing the number of programming hours is the increase in the variety of sports we will cover. In 98-99 we will cover 15
olympic sports. In 99-00 it will be 17. In 00-01 it grows to 22. Those sports will include wrestling, table tennis, swimming, track and field,
cycling, boxing, tumbling and trampoline. In addition to event coverage, CBC Sports is committed to developing shows and series which highlight
sports journalism.
Beginning in January 2000, we will broadcast a 17-part series on Canadian Olympic Heros of the last century. We have also made a long-term
commitment to broadcast in primetime the Canadian Sports Awards - an evening honouring Canada's best amateur athletes. The final element of
this plan is how we will package these shows. We believe it is important to present the amateur sports on the telecast schedule on a consistant day
and at a consistant time. Beginning in October, CBC Sports Saturday will start at 12:00et. Our coverage of diving, gymnastics, show jumping and
skiing etc will be wrapped around the Saturday afternoon broadcasts of CFL and baseball. In doing so we intend to create a significant viewership
for all our sports programming.

10. NEW NATIONAL SPORT CENTRE WILL HELP DEVELOP HIGH PERFORMANCE ATHLETES
AND COACHES IN THE ATLANTIC REGION
HALIFAX and FREDERICTON, May 7, 1999 A new National Sport Centre for high performance athletes and coaches is now fully operational in the Atlantic region. The funding partners -- the federal Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canadian Olympic Association (COA), the Coaching Association
of Canada (CAC), and the governments of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Prince Edward Island (PEI) -- announced the
establishment of the new National Sport Centre -- Atlantic Canada at a news conference that took place today in Halifax, at the Nova Scotia Sport
Heritage Centre and in Fredericton at the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame. The new Centre will enable high performance athletes in the region
to receive enhanced training through top coaching, sport medicine, and sport science services. The Centre will also provide athlete services such
as career counselling and assistance with employment searches. The decentralized service structure will be developed to support high
performance athletes training throughout the Atlantic region.
Senator Al Graham, Leader of the Government in the Senate and minister responsible for Nova Scotia, participating on behalf of Canadian Heritage
Minister Sheila Copps, explained that the National Sport Centre -- Atlantic Canada is part of a national network of Sport Centres being developed
across the country. AI am pleased that the establishment of this new Centre means the Atlantic Region will now be providing its high performance
athletes and coaches with the same kind of support they already receive at National Sport Centres in Victoria, Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Montreal,
and Toronto, said Senator Graham. The COA is committed to helping athletes achieve a high performance level at centres across the country. The
National Sport Centre -- Atlantic Canada will help ensure that local athletes can benefit from the same services offered at other Centres. The
new National Sport Centre has an annual operating budget of $355,000 most of which will be paid by the partners through a multi-year funding
commitment.
Beginning in 1999-2000, the Government of Canada and the Canadian Olympic Association will each provide $100,000, the Coaching Association of Canada will contribute $50,000, the provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick will both contribute $30,000, Newfoundland and Labrador will provide
$15,000, and Prince Edward Island will contribute $5,000. The budget of the former Atlantic Coaching Field Office has also been incorporated into
the Centre along with the programs and services it provided.
BACKGROUNDER NATIONAL SPORT CENTRES
The Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canadian Olympic Association, and the Coaching Association of Canada have joined in a partnership committed
to creating a network of National Sport Centres (NSC) across Canada in order to enhance the training environment for high performance athletes.
The three national partners enter into a partnership at each NSC with the respective provincial governments and other relevant local sport
organizations in an attempt to finance a comprehensive high performance athlete development model that spans both national and provincial
jurisdictions. The partners view the NSC as a major vehicle to achieve the objective of enhancing the level and increasing the efficiency of delivery
of services for high performance athletes and coaches. NSC activity is intended to complement National Sport Federation programming in the pursuit
of high performance excellence with a focus on coordinating access and delivery of essential support services for athletes and coaches.
The current objective is to create a coordinated network of NSCs in major Canadian cities to service the majority of national team athletes training
in Vancouver/Victoria, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal and Atlantic Canada. This network might include additional NSCs, with a smaller scope
of activity, that are developed in conjunction with the hosting of future major games and Canada Games. There is also the potential for the
provinces to develop provincial or regional sport centre programs which could be linked with the national network.

médico-sportifs et de sciences du sport. Il leur offrira aussi des services personnalisés, notamment en orientation professionnelle et en
recherche d'emploi. Une structure de services décentralisée sera mise en place pour faciliter la formation d'athlètes de haut niveau dans toute la
région de l'Atlantique.

FICHE D'INFORMATION CENTRES NATIONAUX DU SPORT
Le ministère du Patrimoine canadien, l'Association olympique canadienne (AOC) et l'Association canadienne des entraîneurs (ACE) se sont associés
pour créer un réseau de Centres nationaux du sport (CNS) dans tout le Canada, en vue d'offrir de meilleures conditions d'entraînement aux
athlètes de haut niveau. Les trois partenaires nationaux s'engagent dans chacun des CNS et s'associent avec les gouvernements provinciaux respectifs
et d=autres organismes locaux de sport appropriés afin de financer un modèle global de développement des athlètes de haut niveau qui touche tant
le niveau national que le niveau provincial.
Les partenaires estiment que ces CNS aident grandement à accroître et à améliorer les services fournis aux athlètes et aux entraîneurs de haut
niveau. Le but des CNS est de compléter les programmes d'excellence sportive de la Fédération nationale de sport, les activités étant
concentrées sur la coordination de l'accès et la prestation des services de soutien essentiels aux athlètes et aux entraîneurs. L'objectif actuel est
de constituer un réseau coordonné de CNS dans les grandes villes canadiennes afin de servir la plupart des athlètes d'équipes nationales
s=entraînant à Vancouver/Victoria, à Calgary, à Winnipeg, à Toronto, à Montréal et dans la région de lAtlantique.

'67 Pan Am volunteers invited to reunite. They made it happen in 1967. Now volunteers, athletes, and anyone involved in the '67 Pan Am Games are
invited to a reunion on Saturday, July 17, 1999, in Selkirk. Music, entertainment, memorabilia displays, barbecue and refreshments, dancing,
games, swimming, horseshoe pitching . . . and much more is planned. Family and friends are also invited. A limited addition lapel pin and a

Volunteers . . . we need YOU
In its final volunteer recruitment push, the Pan Am Games Society is looking for volunteers to fill jobs in specific areas. Volunteers are
particularly needed in the following areas: motor pool (to transport people, goods and equipment); security access/control (to check
accreditation badges at venues); food services (to assist at venues and villages with distribution and safe handling of food, no food preparation
required); logistics/materials management (to deliver supplies at venues, involves liting and carrying); and computer technology, dispatching,
accounting, and law enforcement. Also needed are announcers and Spanish-English and French-English bilingual volunteers.
Volunteer forms are available at MTS phone centres; Pan Am Volunteer Centre, 500 Shaftesbury Blvd.,Winnipeg; and Pan Am Games Headquarters, 12th
floor, 433 Main Street, Winnipeg. Forms can be dropped off at these same locations. After May 26, forms will also be available for pickup only at
Royal Banks, MPI Claim Centres, CJOB, and Tim Hortons.

12. Paralympic Postcard - Issue No. 29 - May 1999
NEWS OF THE SYDNEY 2000 PARALYMPIC GAMES LIZZIE 'LIVING' AT FRANKLINS
An exciting range of Paralympic Games merchandise is now on sale at Franklins' 265 stores in four Australian states and features that lively
lizard herself, Lizzie the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games Mascot.
PRE-COMPETITION TESTING
Any of the 4 000 athletes expected at the Paralympic Village during next year's Games could be subject to pre-competition drug testing after an
agreement was reached between the Sydney Paralympic Organising Committee (SPOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC). SPOC Doping
Control Program Manager, Nicki Vance, who is also responsible for setting up drug testing during the Olympic Games, said that when athletes start
arriving in the Paralympic Village from 11 October, 2000, they will be subject to random tests .The pre-competition testing would be a signi-
ficant deterrent for any athletes using banned drugs. IPC Medical Officer Dr Riding said Sydney would be the first Paralympic Games to have the
pre-competition testing. Athletes will be tested either in the Village or at training venues.
TICKETS & TORCH
With all the publicity recently about the Olympic Games tickets, don't forget that ticket prices to the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games will be
announced in August and go on sale in October this year. The August ticket price announcement to the general public will cover the Opening and Closing
Ceremonies, prices for the reserved finals and the Day Pass. Details of the route of the Paralympic Torch Relay and the design of the Torch will be
known on 28 July this year.
IPC DAZZLED BY STADIUM
The 22 members of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) were given a tour of the Homebush Bay site last month and stood in awe on the track at
the Olympic Stadium. "It's a magnificent venue built with great flexibility, particularly with our needs in mind, while keeping within the
spirit of a big-time sports stadium," Dr Robert Steadward, President of the IPC, said. Vice-President, Francois Terranova, similarly was impressed with
the 110 000 seat stadium, which has 550 wheelchair seats in the stands. The stadium will be officially opened on 12 June this year and will host the
Paralympic Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies and all track and field
events.
