Bonjour/Greetings:

This weekend marks the 15th annual Ontario High School Archery Championships in Toronto.  Everyone in each province knows how difficult the government-education system situation has been over the past two years.  This tournament was definitely in jeopardy of being cancelled, but some dedicated teachers like Kathy Shillinglaw and Bruce Savage have managed to pull it off!  There will probably be over 300 archers again this year. So, for those of you who think teachers won't give up their weekends, this championship is being held on a Saturday with teacher support from all over the province.  Thank you.

Subject: Transit News Release
                                                                         MMay 5, 1999
One Ticket And You're There . . . And Back
The Pan Am Games Society and City of Winnipeg have finalized an agreement that will allow Pan Am ticket holders, Games volunteers and athletes to travel to and from events on the Winnipeg Transit System at no cost.

'The agreement between the Pan Am Games Society and the City of Winnipeg will ease traffic and parking demands at all sports venues in the city and provide an enhanced level of transportation service,' said Bob McMahon, Chief Operating Officer of the Pan Am Games Society. Under the financial arrangements negotiated the extra services are being paid for by the Pan American Games Society. Games event tickets, accreditation badges and volunteer uniforms will serve as a daily bus pass, allowing ticket holders, volunteers and Games participants to ride regular city routes to and from sports venues.

The agreement also establishes 17 extra routes that will provide special service to many sports venues including those that are not on regular transit routes, such as the equestrian events at Bird's Hill Park and the softball tournaments at John Blumberg Park.  Dedicated bus service for accredited media covering the Games and for athletes' transportation within Winnipeg are also covered in the agreement.

'The Winnipeg Transit deal adds the icing to our 'One Ticket and You're There!' promotional campaign,' said McMahon.  McMahon said the transit arrangement will allow the more than 7,000 athletes and team officials participating in the Games 'a great opportunity to travel around
the city, see the sights and meet the people of Winnipeg.'  City Director of Transit Rick Borland estimated that between 15,000 and 17,000
extra people will ride the transit system each day during the Games.

'We normally have about 150,000 transit users on a typical summer day,' said Borland. During peak transit service demand, up to 200 extra buses could be added to regular route service.

5. Report from Mexico City
The IOC held an international coaches seminar in Mexico City this month and FCA was represented by Pascal Colmaire and Saion Mann of Manitoba.  Apparently, the conference was terrific, but so was the street noise.  In fact, the IOC hotel was at one of the busiest intersections in the now very, very polluted city.

Thanks to Al Wills and Karen Reinhart who have sent in all their reports for the AGM already.  Great job!!!  Please keep them coming in.  Particularly, the Executive Committee reports need to be translated and this takes our resident translator par excellence, Alain Gravel, quite a bit of time.
