Greetings....did you miss me? After a snowy trip to beautiful (?) downtown Columbus, Ohio, now I'm back in beautiful (?) snowy downtown Ottawa. The AMO show was well-attended considering the weather across the mid-western United States. Il neige depuis 9 jours autour des etats-unis centrales. Quand je suis retourne a Ottawa, toujours il neige. Ce n'est pas ma faute!
Normally, it takes me about 35 minutes to commute from the sticks to Ottawa. (No comments from Bob Sheppard in Nova Scotia or anyone else who wants to mention how much slower it takes normal people to drive that same distance.) This week, it has been an hour but that's Canada.

10. Finally,
This came over the internet this morning from Kevin Ducharme from Pan Am Games.
Subject: A bit of history
Historic origins: Giving The Finger
In the current film, Titanic, the character Rose is shown giving the finger to Jack (another character). Many people who have seen the film, question whether "giving the finger" was done around the time of the Titanic disaster, or was it a more recent gesture invented by some defiant seventh-grader. According to research, here's the true story . .
Before the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, the French, anticipating victory overthe English, proposed to cut off the middle finger of all captured English soldiers. Without the middle finger it would be impossible to draw. The renowned English longbow and therefore be incapable of fighting in the future.
This famous weapon was made of the native English Yew tree, and the act of drawing the longbow was known as "plucking the yew" (or "pluck yew"). Much to the bewilderment of the French, the English won a major upset and began mocking the French by waving their middle fingers at the defeated French, saying, "See, we can still pluck yew! PLUCK YEW!"
Over the years some 'folk etymologies' have grown up around this symbolic gesture. Since 'pluck yew' is rather difficult to say (like "pleasant mother plucker", which is who you had to go to for the feathers used on the arrows for the longbow), the difficult consonant cluster at the beginning has gradually changed to a labiodental fricative 'F', and thus the words often used in conjunction with the one-finger-salute are mistakenly thought to have something to do with an intimate encounter. It is also because of the pheasant feathers on the arrows that the symbolic gesture is known as "giving the bird".
And yew all thought yew knew everything!

-Target Butts/les paillisons
FITA's technical committee will make a motion in Riom, France Congress that target butts will no longer be at 15 degrees, but 9 degrees since this rule originates from the dates of loopy, wooden arrows. (Seems like a no-brainer--I'm sure it will pass.)
-Elimination rounds - Outdoor Olympic Round at Target Championships There is a proposal for Riom also to reduce the ranking round from a full FITA to 1 FITA 70 meter round. The proposal states also that the Olympic Round Elimination Round be changed from 64 to 8 to 60 to 16 with 5 matches in Groups of 6 over 2x6 arrows. The Finals Round starting with 16 competitiors would be changed to 2x6 for 1/8 and 1/4 finals and the medal rounds would be 4x3x1:40 seconds each.
If you wish more information on this, contact Pascal Colmaire. If FCA does not want this change to go through, Al Wills, our FITA delegate, would need some direction from the membership.
SO IF THIS AFFECTS YOU----LET PEOPLE KNOW YOUR THOUGHTS.

"Canadian Made" is a thirteen part series on Canad's young athletes. Coming soon to television (je pense seulement en anglais presentement), a series of shows taking a look at athletes. The target audience is youth ages 9-25 and a web-site will be available soon. I will pass along more information as it becomes available.
