Subject: July 3rd, 1998

Greetings and Happy Canada Day/Bonne Fete Canada:

I feel a little like the CBC anchor desk here today:

AND NOW FOR THE NEWS

1. There has been great interest in our Championship of Americas team results. It has been very frustrating to collect it all. But these are snatches of what I have received. There is a website being developed at http://www.sunbeach.net/cap/btaa but it may not be active. So, with apologies to everyone until I get the full set of results, here goes. Don't forget that there are junior and senior divisions, male and female and of course compound and recurve.

Congratulations to all our Canadian team members!!!!

2. On the home front:

a. One note from last week's 1312 record announcement for Angela Pretty: Please note this was the first time a Canadian OLYMPIC woman has accomplished this. It has taken them a while to catch up with our Compound women. Susan Lemke had a 1301 AVERAGE using the INNER TEN. Quite an accomplishment!!!! Thanks for the help, Jude.

b. Greg Durward broke 3 Cndn. 900 round records and 1 FITA field record for master's men unlimited. He also earned his 1200 FITA pin recently.

c. Sylive Plant was recognized for a record she set in 1994 with 110 on the NOR 12-arrow pass.

d. Vladimir Kopeck set a new 90 meter record for master men unlimited of 299 at Arizona Cup.

e. And this weekend past, Diane wicks broke the following cub Olympic female: 60m 286, 40m 302 and a total of 1183 Amanda Smith-Millar shot at 50m 298. Also Antoinette Robinchaud shot a nice round in New Brunswick recently, 1263. Good stuff.

Just a reminder to all our athletes. When you send your Excellence 2000 results to the office, PLEASE circle anything you think may be a new record. I'm sorry, but I just don't have the time to sit here and check everything. Also, I don't want to send Christianne piles of paper, which may have no records in them.

Congratulations to all. The new record sheets are going to really look different when they are next printed. Special thanks to Christianne Murphy who is our records chairperson out of Levis, PQ. Great job, Christianne. There's a lot happening this year, and that's an encouraging sign.

3. Next, ATTENTION ALBERTA: Phoebe let me know that there was an error in last week's schedule. The Ablerta Outdoor Championships are July 25 and 26 at the Sherwood Park outdoor range, not July 27 as reported. Thanks Phoebe.

4. The Sport Medicine And Science Council of Canada will be disbanding on December 31, 1998. There is an internal review going on as to servicing clients and members. I think this is just another victim of government cutbacks. We will see what they are able to come up with.

5. There's a new book out by Terry Orlick, Canadian sports guru. "Embracing Your Potential" deals with self-discovery, balance, success in sports, work and life. You can order it for $22.95 Canadian from Human Kinetics at 1-800-747-4457.

6. Pan Am Games tickets need to be booked soon. August 1 is the deadline if you think you may want to go to the games to watch our archers or just opening ceremonies. Information has been sent to all FCA Directors. Please get in touch with them. Archery tickets are $10-$15 and opening and closing ceremonies are $35-$135.

7. The FCA is still in need of a Chairperson for the Coaching Committee. This is a challenging and rewarding position. I held it for several years before Al Wills chaired, and it can be a lot of fun. Besides, you'll be running the only committee in FCA that still has outside funding (CAC). It isn't quite so frustrating as other Chair/VP positions that way. Please contact Al Wills directly if you need more information on this position. alwills@IslandNet.com.

8. Thanks to the club reps who faithfully send in their tournament results and judge timing sheets to the national office. It certainly makes my job easier. If you are the club e-mail contact, please ensure that your tournament chairperson sends the results for FCA REGISTERED TOURNAMENTS to the national office. Thanks again.

9. And finally, this week I'd like to draw people's attention to another group of volunteers, this time in the provinces. Membership is a time-consuming job and I would like to thank the following people for their time, effort and patience while FCA was going through so many personnel and computer changes this year:

James Wiebe, BC

Tom Sekura, AB

Gib Henderson, SK

Sue Hall, MB

Andrea Dopson, ON

Marc DeGrandmont, PQ

Denise LeBlanc, NB

Sheila Sheppard, NS

Andrew Webber, NF

Greg Loftus, AAA

You're the greatest.

See you next week. :)
