Subject: July 10th, 1998

Greetings!

Yes, yes, I know, I did not send this out on Friday. I was having just WAY too much fun with the Rules Book revisions. Sheila Sheppard and her crew should be commended for all their work. So, I didn't get the mach-up finished until late on Friday, and I'm sorry to have to admit it, but I'd had enough of looking at a computer in 9-point. By the way, Sheila and her group have been super busy because the Judges Course Conductor manual is also ready to go to the printers today! Congrats!

1. Now, a BIG thank you must go out to Sean McKenty and Kim Weiler in Ontario. I know that people in other provinces seem to be able to run their youth summer games without much problem (?) But, in Ontario, the Summer Games organization for archery has been a magical mystery tour of late. For the last two times, OSG has been saved for our young archers by last-minute heroics. Gary Timinski and Sean along with half of Gary's family saved archery for our archers in London two years ago. This time Kim is doing a lot of the last minute stuff with Sean. And of course, always present to help get things going is Bruce Savage. So now, Guelph is a go. But, here's the punch line: this time the dates for the Games were not published properly in the OAA Directory and all the provincial elite archers will be in Winnipeg at the nationals!!! So I ran my trials for nothing, but besides that we are going to get a bunch of high school kids involved for first time, and that's good news. So, for all of the volunteers out there who struggle constantly with organizing provincial games, HATS OFF TO YOU!! IT'S NOT AN EASY JOB.

2. News from Nova Scotia: Another club has been successful in implementing the Canbow Skills award programme. Sheet Harbour has had a good turn out for the indoor season and is looking forward to another banner year next fall. Congratulations to Hugh Arnott and the rest of the parents, volunteers and young archers in that club.

3. News from 3D Nationals: It sounds like a great event is in the offing in Saskatchewan. Attendance may be the highest ever. If you have not made final plans or need more information, please contact Dave Skaar at: david.skaar@sk.sympatico.ca for details.

4. News from Winnipeg: Don't wait until the last moment to register. Give the volunteers there a fighting chance and register today. You can contact Wendy Ross at: hross@mb.sympatico.ca.

5. Pan Am Games 1999 Tickets

The dates and events given to the Ticket representatives for the sport schedule is as follows:

August 4 qualification round (men and women shoot on separate days)

August 5 qualification round each day, 9:30 to 4:30

General admission $10/day/person

August 7 quarter finals and finals individual 9:30 to 4:30 $15 per person

August 8 team event and finals 9:30 to 4:30 $15 per person

Don't forget also Opening Ceremonies July 23 with tickets ranging from $35.00 to $235.00 per person. Closing Ceremonies are on August 8th and prices are the same. Full details were supplied to those on the Board of Directors mailing list. FCA is supposed to submit an initial ticket request with 50% deposit by August 1 OF THIS YEAR. So, if you think your parents, friends, neighbors or significant others are going to Winnipeg for Pan Am Games, get in touch with FCA right away. Give full details about who, when and how many. When the money is received in Ottawa for 50% of the total, I will place an order on the official entry form and make the arrangements. So, SPREAD THE WORD. Let's have lots of support for our Pan Am Games team and visiting competitors next August in Winnipeg.

6. A very important Board mailing will be going out either today or Wednesday and a letter from the President, Allan Dean, to all Board of Directors and Provincial Presidents will be included. Please take the time to read his letter and ideas to better prepare for the August meeting in Winnipeg. Your input is sincerely appreciated.

7. COA formally hired Bob Bettauer as president of the new national sport centre slated for Toronto. I had the opportunity to meet and talk to Bob at a recent Sport Canada/CAC/COA forum on national sports centres held recently in Ottawa. Bob was interested to hear about archery's experiences with national sports centres in the past, the bureaucratic process and conflicts, as well as what archery needs from a national training centre in such a large urban area as Toronto. I found him very approachable, very interested in our perception of sports centres and archery. So, when that centre opens, there may be some positive news for all archers.

8. With the return of the larger 10-ring for compound shooters, FCA's record chairperson Christianne Murphy is a busy lady these days. Master's men unlimited in particular is really changing and congratulations go out to Herwig Keifer of Alberta who shot 304/336/325/340/1305 on June 20/21. At the same tournament, Jennifer Block shot 319/313/325/353/1310 in the cadet female compound division; Tom Sew shot 340 at 70m a round total of 1349, and 353 at 30m for senior men's UNL.; Vladimir Kopecky shot 342 at 30m for master men UNL; Tom Block had 315 at 50m and 337 at 30m for SR men's BHU; and Jude Hooey shot 335 at 60m, 341 at 50m, 350 at 30m and totaled 1336. Thanks to Jude Hooey for that update.

Al Wills reported that Stuart Miller shot a FITA star this weekend as a last tune up before leaving for Europe, 320/342/319/356/1337. That's great news and good luck to all our young people going overseas. Patrick Pregent shot an excellent round this weekend, too. Things are really exciting.

Diane Wicks broke two cub Olympic records this weekend: 329 at 30m and 303 at 50m.

I'm glad so many people are starting to share results. It makes the e-mail a really useful tool to keep everyone up-to-date. BUT REMEMBER, SEND A COPY OF YOUR SCORE CARD TO CHRISTIANNE FOR HER RECORDS: 38 Andre Laurendeau, Levis, PQ G6W 6R5

FITA issued an update on world records and the following Canadian was listed:

Junior men compound division 90m Brian Bagnall 323. This record has stood since 1994. For those of you who did not know, Brian has moved to California recently but I haven't heard if he has been able to do some shooting. If anyone here's about our transplanted Canadian, let's hear.

9. COPANARCO indoor results are finalized and medals are being forwarded to the Ottawa office. The medals will be mailed to the clubs hosting the event. Please pass these medals on to the shooters with FCA's congratulations. Next year this event will be called the postal continental indoor championships of the Americas and will run from February 20 to March 21, giving clubs more room to maneuver to set dates.

By the way, for those of you who are elite archers, the dates of FITA's world championships in France have been moved to July 20 - 29, 1999 for better TV pick-up.

10. Dennis Mrokwia is off to Europe attending the 16th world field championships in Yyrol Austria and then zipping back in time for the Canadian Target/Field Championships. Best wishes to you, and to Don Lovo for a great tournament.

11. Anybody who has been trying to get hold of Joan McDonald's fax number as listed in the FCA Directory has been frustrated, I'm sure. Joan tells us that her fax was changed a long time ago and it's best to fax her at home at 416-481-0682. Please remember that Excellence members should still send their scores through the FCA Office in Ottawa.

And, in the fax department, Pat Ukrainetz has a number also: 403-252-1814.
