August 28, 1998

From information@fca.ca

Greetings! Yes, I'm back. And, no, you did not miss the exciting installment on August 7th because I was having soooo much fun getting ready for the meetings at the Nationals, that it just didn't make the top 10 things to do before flying out. But, I will make amends with lots of information this time out.

1. FITA rankings

Last time I wrote about Caroline Labrecque's ranking. This time FITA has listed world Field rankings. There are no Canadians in the top 20 for men or women. It appears to be recurve only.

Men

  1. M. Frangilli, Italy

2. R. Johnson, USA

3. C. Peignois, Belgium

Women

1. N. Nasaridze, Turkey

2. C. Pfohl, Germany

  1. N. Valeeva, Italy

Those of you interested in Olympic archery will recognize quite a few names, which proves the point once again that if you want to shoot field well, you'd better know how to shoot a bow first no matter what the terrain, and learn to judge distance second.

2. FITA World Field Championships, Austria 1998

Barebow

Women

P. Lovell, GBR

O. Boussiere, FRA

J. Schneider, GER

Men

E. Jonsson, SWE

M. Larsson, SWE

M. Podrzaj, SLO

Compound

C. Pellen, FRA

P.Andersson, SWE

M. Ragsdale, USA

D. Cousins, USA

B. Pearson, USA

N. Baldur, DEN

Recurve

S. Mayrhofer, AUT

J. Shales GBR

I. Ranchini,

M. Frangilli, ITA

C. Ferriou, FRA

G. Van Berkel, NED

There was dope testing done at this event, and FITA is happy to announce that there were no infractions and all samples were negative.

And on the topic of doping, you better not get caught with anything suspicious if you are going to catch the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!!! There are pretty severe punishments LIKE DEATH if you even have a pipe that might be misconstrued as a tool for dope useage. What we can all learn from this is, when travelling internationally, make sure you know the destination country's laws on substances BEFORE you go, whether you are an athlete or a team helper.

4. New Multi-sport training centres

In June I represented FCA at a planning session regarding how multisport centres, like the one our NAC is part of, are going to develop and have consistent policies and access. There was mention made of two new centres opening and now the official word is out from Canadian Heritage. They are looking to fill the position of President in Greater Vancouver and Atlantic Canada. Formal ads have already appeared in French and English daily papers. So, besides the Toronto centre opening soon with Bob Bettenaur, two more areas of Canada will be served through this system. More on this next week when I've had a chance to catch up on my reading.

5. Bad news

The Canadian Paralympic Committee has felt the crunch. I got a phone call yesterday from one of their Directors advising FCA that the staff there had been cut from 4 to 1. Ofcourse, this is nothing new for FCA, but CPC's reasons are a little different: they did not pull in the corporate sponsorship they were planning on from Nagano. Thankfully, they have still got considerable financial support from Heritage Canada.

Just as FCA pulled away from government and then government pulled away from FCA, all sports must not put all their financial eggs in one basket. Every organization has to have a good mix of membership-derived revenue, sponsorship and government support in order to be stable. CPC has had to cancel all its board and athlete meetings (sound familiar) and were phoning to apologize for the disruption it will cause to our representatives. I am sure we can all sympathize with CPC and hope they will have better success after Sydney.

6. Canadian Archery publications - Free to good home

I have complete sets of several archery publications to give away. If anyone is interested, please contact me at(Stan Siatkowski).

"Bowbender" from the 1st issue (1984) to 1996.

"US Archer" from the 1st issue (1982) to 1992.

11. Big thanks to Winnipeg

For those of you who did not make it to the nationals in Manitoba, you missed a really good time. Though the wind played havoc with some field scores and women's FITA day 2, it was a terrific week. The Manitoba volunteers were under a lot of pressure not only to hold a Canadian nationals, but a pre-Pan Am Games event AND a FITA world ranking event. They did their homework and it showed. And no detail was too small. They even had all the FCA medals mounted as engraved trophies!! Wow. Results were well done and on time. The judges were even given vans to use for ground transportation.

Anyway, now it's on to 1999 and good luck to everyone. A big special thanks to Ron M., Gerry out on the field course, Wendy R., Susie and the tight crew that ran it all. But, they're a crazy bunch. They want to hold the 3D event for the Aboriginal Games in 2002 so they may just be bidding for another Nationals!!!??? I think they were out in the sun too long.

12. Upcoming events

I have not had time to incorporate the new tournaments given to me at the nationals in the regular FCA schedule format, so this is sketchy until next time:

Saskatchewan: Canadian FITA September 5 & 6. Contact Archie Lovelace

Ontario: Canadian FITA's Sept 9th and 10th, Sept 15th and 16th, contact Joan McDonald, Toronto

BC: Canadian FITA September 26th, contact Mike

Miller Parksville BC

Indoors FITA I's on January 30 and February 27th

13. Lucky number about an unlucky Programmes manager Lastly, you know the world is a pretty crazy place. For those of you who do not know me, or who I did not get the pleasure of meeting for the first time out in Winnipeg, I live in rural Ontario. Yes, I know I work in a city, but I LIVE with the cows and the chickens (big time). I took my car in after the Nationals to my friendly neighbourhood mechanic to have the oil changed. His shop is in the middle of nowhere, too.

Now, for the last 18 years, every time I have taken my car in to have it serviced, he's locked it up for the night. Never a problem, until now. Some yahoo with a weird sense of humour saw the box of all my papers from Canadians in the back of my car. My car was unlocked, so whoever it was opened the box, tossed the lid, and took the whole darn thing. You would really wonder what someone would want with the FCA gavel and Roberts rules of Order (really exciting reading) but away it has gone. They did minor damage to my car (no jokes from those who know what my car looks like to begin with) and one Phil Collins tape (obviously not classical music fans because they left the rest). So last Sunday my two children and I went "ditch" looking hoping that the thieves would realize how exciting FCA meeting minutes really are and pitch it. No such luck.

So, if you gave me anything at nationals or asked me to do something and I wrote it down, you'll have to remind me again because it's all gone. Life's like that.

See you next week.

KM  :)
