Holiday Hours/les heures du bureau national

Greetings to everyone/Bonjour tout le monde:

This is my last Friday e-mail message for 1998. Joyeux Noel et Meilleurs

Voeux. Merry Christmas to all and have a safe and happy holiday.

First we have a message from our new chief. Notre chef veut communiquer les meilleurs voeux a tous.

As another year closes, The executive and staff of FCA would like to wish you and yours a great holiday and many successes in 1998. As we look back over 1998, we have to hope that we have weathered the worst, however there are no easy time ahead. We all must continue to work together for archery in Canada. In particular I ask you NOT to just work for Target archery, 3D archery, Judging or Coaching or any other particular discipline, but to work for ARCHERY. We all shoot the bow and arrow and if we can all work together on that simple premise, things will be easier for us all.

The FCA is an association of archer members from each Province, our link to you is your Provincial President and Director. I ask you to keep in touch with them and us and give us feedback on all issues. Our web site (www.FCA.ca) has information on all FCA programs and volunteers, please make sure all the archers you know are aware of it. As I have said many times before, if you consider were doing a good job, tell others, if not tell us!

Merry Christmas

For those of you who are interested in 3D, and there are quite a few, please review Tom's work please and comment directly to him at: paukovic@minet.gov.mb.ca

4. A Christmas Funny /Que pensez-vous

Subject: To understand Santa

For the need to understand in all of us....

There are approximately two billion children (persons under 18)in the world. However, since Santa does not visit children of Muslim, Hindu Jewish or Buddhist (except maybe in Japan) religions, this reduces the workload for Christmas night to 15% of the total, or 378 million (according to the population reference bureau). At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that comes to 108 million homes, presuming there is at least one good child in each. Santa has about 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 967.7 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with a good child, Santa has around 111,000th of a second to park the sleigh, hop out, jump down the chimney, fill the stocking, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left for him, get back up the chimney, jump into the sleigh and get onto the next house. Assuming that each of these 108 million stops is evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false, but will accept for the purposes of our calculations), we are now talking about 0.78 miles per household; a total trip of 75.5 million miles, not counting bathroom stops or breaks. This means Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second--3,000 times the speed of sound.

For purposes of comparison, the fastest man made vehicle, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second, and a conventional reindeer can run (at best) 15 miles per hour. Flying 11 reindeer can pull 10 times the normal amount, the job can't be done with eight or even nine of them- -Santa would need 360,000 of them. This increases the payload, not counting the weight of the sleigh, another 54,000 tons, or roughly seven times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth (the ship, not the monarch). 600,000 tons travelling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance - this would heat up the reindeer in the same fashion as a spacecraft re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer would adsorb 14.3 quintillion joules of energy per second each. In short, they would burst into flames almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them and creating deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team would be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second, or right about the time Santa reached the fifth house on his trip. Not that it matters, however, since Santa, as a result of accelerating from a dead stop to 650 m.p.s. in .001 seconds, would be subjected to acceleration forces of 17,000 g's. A 250 pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim)would be pinned to the back of the sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force, instantly crushing his bones and organs and reducing him to a mass of quivering ganglions. Therefore, if Santa did exist, he's dead now.

Merry Christmas.

Subject: Sport in Canada - Everybody's business / Le Sport au Canada c'est l'affaire de tous et de toutes

Date: Mon, 21 Dec 1998 16:07:15 -0500

It has been a long time since we have had significant public and media attention on the funding of amateur sport in Canada. The release of the Sub-committee report gives us a tremendous opportunity to influence public support and government funding of amateur sport. The report is the culmination of a year long study on the economic impact of sport in Canada. While much of the media attention prior to and since the release of the report has focused on the professional realm of sport, the most significant analysis in the report deals with the amateur side of sport. We must not allow the "baby to be thrown out with the bath water". The amateur sport sector needs to have its voice heard if it believes that the Mills report is worth supporting. To sit idly by and not comment would be missing a unique opportunity to advance sport development in Canada and increase funding for sport.

In order to properly position the amateur sport community, here's how your organization can assist:

1. sign-on to the attached letter of support. This special e-mail letter (bilingual) will be sent directly to all Members of Parliament (including the federal cabinet).

2.encourage all of your members to sign-on and support the report through this e-mail letter.

The form is at http://www.canadiansport.com/mills.html

1.inscrivez-vous à la lettre d'appui ci-jointe (bilingue). Nous la ferons parvenir par courrier électronique directement à tou(te)s les député(e)s parlementaires (incluant les membres du Cabinet fédéral);

2.encouragez tous vos membres à s'inscrire et à appuyer le rapport par voie de cette lettre électronique.

La lettre se trouve à: http://www.canadiansport.com/millsf.html
